ASSOCIATE GENERAL COUNSEL AILEEN UGALDE APPOINTED ASSISTANT TO THE NEW PRESIDENT

Aileen Ugalde, associate general counsel for the past seven years, has been named Assistant to the President, effective February 1, and will manage the transition of presidential leadership for Dr. Shalala over the next several months. As senior advisor to Dr. Shalala, Ugalde will direct and coordinate activities in the Office of the President when Dr. Shalala becomes UM's fifth president on June 1. FAMILY MEDICINE APPOINTS DR. PENNY TENZER AS VICE CHAIR

Penny Tenzer, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health, has been named its vice chair. In her new role, Dr. Tenzer will assume a wider range of administrative duties and will continue to direct the department's residency program. She also is currently a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is board certified by the American Board of Family Physicians.

UM PHYSICAL THERAPIST TO CONDUCT RUNNING CLINIC FOR PARALYMPIC ATHLETES

Decorated Paralympic athletes will join Bob Gailey, assistant professor in the Division of Physical Therapy, on February 2 and 3, to get a "leg up" on prosthetic devices geared to optimize their performance. Gailey will conduct agility tests and suggest adjustments for better alignment of the atheletes' prosthetic legs. Some of the special guests joining him include Danny Andrews, a below knee amputee who won a gold medal and set a new world record in the 800 meter distance race in Sydney, Australia; as well as Earl Conner, an above knee amputee who won a silver medal in the 100 meter race in Sydney.

MIAMI HERALD HIGHLIGHTS RECENT MASTERS OF PEDIATRICS CONFERENCE

"Parents work best when they get more than shots and prescriptions from their pediatricians," reads a recent Miami Herald article highlighting the 10th annual Masters of Pediatrics conference, held in Miami Beach. The story, "Pediatricians Partner with Parents on Discipline," focuses on some of the topics addressed at the conference, such as guidance from pediatricians to parents on proper discipline and soothing a colicky baby. Lawrence Schachner, M.D., professor and director of the Dermatology Division in the Department of Pediatrics, coordinated this year's Masters of Pediatrics, which featured about 50 renowned speakers. MIAMI FELLOWS INITIATIVE NOW SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The Miami Fellows Initiative is now seeking applicants for its leadership training and development program. Its goal is to develop a new generation of leaders who understand the significance of community building in a diverse society and the need to explore solutions to the complex problems facing our community. To be eligible, an applicant must be a Miami-Dade resident; be in the early years of his/her career (5 to 10 years after education); and have the energy, commitment and passion to make a difference. COPY CENTER HOSTS OPEN HOUSE TO DEMONSTRATE EXPANDED SERVICES

The University is pleased to announce that Lanier Professional Services will provide reprographic services to UM students, faculty, and staff at three campus copy center locations. Lanier will host an open house with refreshments and door prizes on February 2 at the Park Plaza West Copy Center on the medical campus. Services include high-speed duplication, digital color copying, large format printing, lamination, binding, course packet reproduction, and copyright clearance. In addition to the convenience of free pick-up and delivery, Lanier will begin accepting documents via e-mail attachments in the near future. For more details, call 305-243-4776.

BRAIN-MIND CONFERENCE TO FEATURE LECTURES FROM DR. BERNARD BRUCKER

Bernard Brucker, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, will be a featured speaker at the ninth annual Winter Conference for Brain Mind Function, sponsored by FutureHealth, at the Marco Polo Hotel, North Miami Beach, February 2 - 6. The conference is geared toward physicians, psychologists, and physical therapists, and will focus on research advances in neuroplasticity -- the ability of the central nervous system to reprogram or repair. LEARN TO BE A BETTER SUPERVISOR DURING THREE-WEEK TRAINING SESSION

BIOTECHNOLOGY WINTER SYMPOSIUM NOW ACCEPTING EARLY REGISTRATIONS

Register now for the Miami Nature Biotechnology Winter Symposium, February 3 - 7, at the Radisson Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach.
