UM PARKINSON'S DISEASE RESEARCH
A Miami
Herald article last week featured the School of Medicine's research
efforts toward Parkinson's disease. "Researchers say they are on the brink
of discovering the causes of the devastating neurological disease. And
they say that discovery will eventually bring prevention -- and a cure,"
reads the article. "What's here already and what we can bring here can
easily make this the best place in the world for Parkinson research,"
said William Koller, M.D., research director of the UM-National Parkinson
Foundation (NPF) Parkinson Center. The article also highlights Nathan
Slewitt, voluntary chairman of the board for the NPF, who recently received

UM AND PUBLIC HEALTH TRUST
FORM COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS HIPAA HEALTH CARE ACT
The University of Miami and
the Public Health Trust/Jackson Health System have organized the official
HIPAA Steering Committee that will coordinate the efforts of the medical
center in preparing for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA). All questions should be directed to the

Benefits Administration presents MetLife Employer Support Solutions (ESS), a comprehensive service offering survivorship planning, financial planning, and retirement planning consultation. Previously known as MetLife Progressions, this benefit at the University now offers enhanced financial services within MetLife's national network. Basic planning services are complimentary, but there are fees associated with the new enhanced programs. Office locations include the Faculty Affairs Office (Park Plaza East, Suite L), 1550 N.E. EARN HEALTHCARE SERVICES CERTIFICATION WITH CONTINUING STUDIES PROGRAM
Advanced training in health
care administration is now available from the School of Continuing Studies.
Courses beginning January 29 and running through late spring will provide
participants with a Certificate in Business in Healthcare Services. The
first class, "Introduction to Healthcare Administration," begins January
29, and will provide an overview of the health services system, along
with its historical evolution. Other courses in the program will touch
on healthcare law, human resources consideration, technology, and more.
Courses are $375 each, but a 20 percent discount is offered for UM employees.
Faculty and staff also qualify for tuition remission with a department

SHARPS MUST SEND A REPRESENTATIVE TO MANDATORY MEETING
Faculty and staff who utilize and/or purchase medical sharps must send one representative per department to a mandatory medical safety products exhibit, January 25 and 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. This event will give you the opportunity to meet vendors of safer medical devices and to make arrangements for replacement of devices in your department that lack safety features. The "Dialogues in Research
Ethics" lecture series continues this month with "Internet Research,"
January 26, noon, in the Pharmacology Conference Room (RMSB 6018). Kenneth
Goodman, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of UM's Ethics Programs,
will discuss ethical issues in cyberspace, including confidentiality,
risk-benefit assessment, and valid consent. Lunch will be provided. For
