APPLY NOW FOR FELLOWSHIPS WITH THE AMERICAN
ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE

The Executive Office of Research Leadership announces opportunities for fellowships with the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Fellowship recipients will help shape policy in Washington, D.C., gaining unique experience in participatory public policy through one-year assignments involving domestic and international science policy issues in Congress and several executive branch agencies. Stipends begin at $55,000. Interested applicants must be U.S. citizens with a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral-level degree in any physical, biological, or social science; any field of engineering; or a relevant disciplinary field. Eligible applicants also include those who hold a master’s degree in engineering and have at least three years of post-degree professional experience. Applications are due by January 10, 2002. CME SERIES ON TERRORISM CONCLUDES THIS WEEK
WITH LECTURES ON PREPAREDNESS AND BIOTERRORISM

The Dean’s Lecture Series focusing on Terrorism: Weapons of Mass Destruction, sponsored by the Division of Continuing Medical Education, continues this week with “Hospital Preparedness for Mass Casualties – From Triage to ICU” on Tuesday, December 18; and "An Assessment of Bioterrorism in the United States," on Wednesday, December 19. “Hospital Preparedness for Mass Casualties” will be presented by Mauricio Lynn, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. He will speak on December 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the Rosenstiel Building, fourth floor auditorium. Richard S. Weisman, Pharm.D., associate research professor of pediatrics and coordinator of Jackson’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Program; and Abdul Memon, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine and chairman for the medical advisory board of Jackson’s Weapons of Massive Destruction Response Plan, will present “An Assessment of Bioterrorism in the United States,” December 19, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the Rosenstiel Building, fifth floor auditorium. AMA PRA Category 1 credit will be available for each live session. For faculty unable to attend a particular session, videotapes will be available at the Calder Library. Gift certificates for hatha yoga classes are now available. You can purchase certificates in the amounts of $10, $20, $30, $40, or $50. Did you know that the average pack-a-day smoker spends almost $1100 per year on cigarettes? How about quitting the habit and using that money to take the vacation of your dreams or pampering yourself at a local spa? The Department of Wellness and Recreation offers another installment of its Smoking Cessation Program, beginning January 30. The UM Department of Athletics is teaming up with the U.S. Armed Forces to collect unwrapped toys for the Marines’ Toys for Tots program. Bring an unwrapped toy to the Miami Arena on December 18 and receive a special discounted ticket to watch the Hurricanes face off against the FAMU Rattlers. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. Save your ticket stub from the December 18 game, and you also will be eligible for reduced price on tickets to the World Wrestling Federation’s Holiday Edition of WWF Raw at the Miami Arena, scheduled for December 21. Watch the Hurricanes make a run for the NCAA basketball tournament this year with a Big East Pick n Roll mini-plan package for the 2001-2001 season. The package is $80 and includes tickets to any five Big East Conference games the Canes play at home. Seats will be located in the lower-bowl sidecourt sections of the Miami Arena. A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects in research continues December 18, with "HIPAA," presented by Mike Novo, J.D., assistant general counsel, noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. This is the last seminar for 2001. Beginning January 15, more seminars will be scheduled, featuring such topics as UM Internal Audit Procedures. CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE TEACHES
THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ACUPUNCTURE

Physicians will learn to integrate advanced concepts of acupuncture into healthcare practice and gain proficiency in this discipline at "The Art and Science of Acupuncture," beginning January 12, with classes continuing through May. Classes will be held at the Sieron Building on the medical campus, 1425 N.W. 10th Avenue. Participants can attend as many of the course installments as they wish. Tuition remission is available for University of Miami employees. For other attendants, the complete series fee is $2,600, including required materials. Single installments are $225 each. CME CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE CURRENT
AND FUTURE PEDIATRICS PRACTICES

Registrations are now being accepted for the 11th annual Masters of Pediatrics Conference, sponsored by the Departments of Pediatrics and Dermatology.  The symposium will explore topics in general pediatrics, pediatric dermatology, and pediatric pulmonology and allergy.  Many internationally renowned speakers and School of Medicine faculty will present lectures, and this year's keynote address, entitled "Children's Health Care 2002 and Beyond," will be delivered by UM President Donna E.
