SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM ON THE ROLE OF SIMULATION, PATIENT SAFETY AND TEAM TRAINING IN ADVANCING MEDICAL EDUCATION
The UM – Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety will be hosting a scientific symposium on advancing medical education through the use of team training and medical simulation on Thursday, January 13, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor auditorium. The symposium is designed for health care professionals, educators, scientists, administrators and all others with a common interest in using medical simulation to train safer practitioners. Symposium participants in the UM-JMH community will be able to join simulation experts from around the world in discussing ways to advance medical education. The symposium is scheduled to precede the International Meeting on Medical Simulation held in Miami on January 14-16. DISCUSSION GROUP FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS
S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) Teen is an eight-week, mid-day discussion group that offers parents of teenagers a realistic and practical approach to meeting the challenges of raising teens today. Participants will learn effective and enjoyable ways to communicate with their teens, which will help steer parents toward the goal of raising responsible teens who will grow into responsible men and women, capable of living meaningful, happy adult lives. The course will take place on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in room 6012 of the Diabetes Research Institute. Meeting dates are: 1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/15, 2/24, 3/1, 3/8, and 3/15. UM/SYLVESTER BRAMAN FAMILY BREAST CANCER INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENTAL GRANT PROGRAM
The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has funds available to support one-year pilot projects in the amount of $50,000 to encourage the development of new research directed toward basic, translational and clinical research in breast and ovarian cancers. Support from the Women’s Cancer League allows the institute to fund projects of relevance to ovarian cancer in this round of grant funding. Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows early in their career are not eligible. Deadline for receipt of applications is Monday, January 3. UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Stephen M. Prescott, M.D., H.A. & Edna Benning Presidential Endowed Chair in Human Molecular Biology & Genetics, and executive director, Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, will present “It Began with Endothelial Cells: Lipid Messengers in Vascular Biology, Inflammation, and Cancer,” as part of the UM/Sylvester Distinguished Lecture Series. HUMANA HEALTH CARE CARDS ARE IN THE MAIL
Humana identification member cards were recently mailed to members' home addresses. In the event a Humana card does not reach a member by Saturday, January 1 and health care services are required, simply provide a social security number and advise the provider or pharmacy that you are a member of Humana's health care plan effective January 1. You will be able to obtain service with this information.
GRANT WRITING SEMINAR
You are invited to apply for admission to a one-day grant seminar entitled "Write Winning Grants," which will take place on Friday, February 25 at the Jackson Memorial Hospital Diagnostic Treatment Center, room 259. NEUROLOGICAL UPDATE 2005

TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE – EMPHASIZING WOMEN’S HEALTH
Registration is open for the 37th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology and Neurology, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 28-29 at the Hyatt Regency in Miami. The conference is a primary care update presented by the Center for Research in Medical Education. This year’s focus is heart disease and stroke in women. UM physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses can register for a reduced fee of $100 ($150 for UM physicians). CME credit and nurse contact hours can be earned up to a maximum of 15.5 hours. Tuition remission is available, awarded on a first-come first-served basis. The conference features a variety of School of Medicine faculty, led by Michael S. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., David Lee Gordon, M.D., S. NEW CONCEPTS IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY CONFERENCE
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will be presenting a conference on New Concepts in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Alexander Hotel in Miami Beach on March 2 through 5. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive update of problems encountered in obstetrics and gynecology and its subspecialties. HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Sara Czaja, Ph.D., is leading a study of spinal cord injury in an aging
population focusing on helping improve the quality of life of the patients
and their caregivers. As Americans live longer, more people are aging with
spinal cord injuries than ever before, presenting new challenges. This
NIH-funded study will examine the value of a home-based program that combines
psychological and social intervention, using technology to help patients
who have difficulty with mobility. For more information about the study,

The HPV vaccine has been developed with the goal of decreasing HPV infection
and the persistence of HPV risk types responsible for cervical cancer. We are
looking for healthy women between the ages of 15 to 25 who have not had prior
abnormal pap smears, are not pregnant, are willing to receive the study vaccine,
and are able to commit to a four- year follow up period. For more information,

The SPARE Study (Soy Phytoestrogens As Replacement Estrogen) is currently
recruiting women between 45-58 years of age to study the role of soy phytoestrogens
given in tablet form to prevent bone loss. Participants will be given a
physical exam at study entry, an annual mammogram and bone density test,
and will be asked to come for 10 study visits over a period of two years
for blood tests and to complete questionnaires about diet, exercise, and
