DEDICATION OF LOIS POPE LIFE CENTER BEGINS NEW ERA IN NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH

The Lois Pope LIFE Center officially opened last Thursday, October 26, with a special ceremony hosted by NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw. The dedication featured distinguished speakers Christopher Reeve, Gloria Estefan, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Nick and Marc Buoniconti, and Mrs. Pope, among others. The Lois Pope LIFE Center will house many of the University's neuroscience programs, including The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and key faculty in the Departments of Neurology and Neurological Surgery. MANY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE DOCTORS CHOSEN AS BEST IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Pick up the October 2000 issue of Miami Metro magazine and you'll find more than 40 School of Medicine doctors listed among the best physicians in South Florida. This compilation, titled "Top Docs 2000," also features an extended profile of two UM physicians: Susan Benenati, M.D., voluntary assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, and Robert Myerburg, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Cardiology. Miami Metro asked local doctors who they would send family members to when in need of medical care, and the list was created from their responses. OPEN ENROLLMENT FAIR WILL FEATURE FREE FLU SHOTS AND MORE

The Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will offer free flu shots, glucose tests, and cholesterol tests to faculty, staff, spouses, and dependents who are enrolled in University healthcare options HMO-1, HMO-2, or POS-3. Healthcare membership cards with membership numbers must be shown to receive these services without charge. Those who are not enrolled in these healthcare options may get a flu shot for $10. The shots are available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Jackson cafeteria, November 2 and 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CELEBRATE THE GIFT OF LIFE AND DONATE BLOOD

Blood donors will join hands around the Alamo on November 9 as part of a celebratory event sponsored by the South Florida Blood Banks. A party will be held in Alamo Park, featuring live music, and everyone who donates blood will receive a free t-shirt. The blood drive will run November 8 and 9, with donor stations in Rosenstiel's second floor student lounge on the first day, and additional stations in the UM/Sylvester courtyard, Bascom Palmer, and the Mailman Center on November 9.

CELEBRATE EMPLOYEE DAY 2000 WITH THE HURRICANES

November 4 is Employee Day, and full-time UM employees can get one free ticket and purchase up to four additional tickets for immediate family members for $1 each (with a valid UM ID badge) to see the 'Canes battle it out against the No. 3-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies in a Big East Showdown. Get your tickets at the Hurricane Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center on the Coral Gables campus. The office is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday - Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday. FAMILY MEDICINE SELLS TASTY TREATS TO BENEFIT UNITED WAY

The Department of Family Medicine & Community Health will hold a bake sale to benefit the United Way on October 31, 8:30 to 11 a.m., in front of the Highland Professional Building.

THRILLS AND CHILLS AWAIT YOU AT PHYSICIAN REFERRAL'S HAUNTED OFFICE

Are you brave enough to face ghosts and goblins this Halloween? The Physician Referral Office invites you to their Haunted Office on October 31. You can find the fun in the Park Plaza West breezeway, next to the University Credit Union. Admission is 50 cents, and candy bags and cups also will be sold for $1 and $3. All proceeds will benefit the United Way.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE TEACHES PROPER WAYS TO SHIP INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES

The Office of Professional Development presents "Shipping Infectious Substances" on October 31, 8:30 to 11 a.m., Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. This course will teach proper procedures in shipping potentially infectious substances such as blood, tissue, and human or animal fluids. To register, call 305-243-3090.

POSTER DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology reminds you that the poster submission deadline for the 2000 Miami Nature Biotechnology Winter Symposium is November 1. This year, the conference will be held at Miami Beach's Radisson Deauville Resort, February 3 - 7. The focus will be "Cell Death and Aging." Registration is $300 for UM faculty and staff and $195 for students, but waivers are available for faculty and staff from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UM/Sylvester, and the Miami VA. UM/SYLVESTER OFFERS MEMORIAL LECTURE ON NEW CANCER TREATMENTS

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will present the Inaugural Egozi Memorial Lecture, November 3 in Sylvester Conference Room 1301, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event honors David Egozi, a Miami businessman who succumbed to carcinoid tumors in 1995. The purpose of the lecture is to present information on new therapies, particularly radiolabelled octreotide, a promising new treatment. Eugene Woltering, M.D., F.A.C.S., the James D. Rivers Professor of Surgery and Neuroscience at Louisiana State University, will be the keynote speaker. Other lectures will be given by UM faculty members Pasquale Benedetto, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine, and Parvin Ganjei-Azar, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Cytopathology . EDUCATE YOURSELF THROUGH AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROGRAMS

Upcoming educational programs from the Office of Professional Development include "Human Resources and Affirmative Action Policies and Procedures," November 3, 9 a.m. to noon. This seminar will help you create a successful work environment through effective recruitment, selection, promotion, and termination. A second course, "Sexual Harassment: A Shared Legal Responsibility," will teach you how to prevent, investigate, and solve problems in your department, and is scheduled for November 3, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Finally, "ADA, FMLA and Workers' Compensation: Their Similarities and Differences" will address assessment and implementation requests for reasonable accommodation and proactive measures to avoid claims on November 6, 9 a.m. to noon. All classes will be held in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155.

EXPERT DISCUSSES NEW DIRECTIONS IN SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER

The Florida Breast Cancer Coalition, the UM Division of Student Affairs, and the UM Women's Commission present "New Direction in Breast Cancer Screening ," a luncheon lecture by Susan Love, M.D., November 9, noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Flamingo Ballroom/University Center, room 226, Coral Gables campus. Dr. Love, adjunct professor of surgery at UCLA, has written Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, and she will report on recent developments in the fight to eradicate the disease. The event is open to all UM students, faculty, and staff, and a free lunch will be served, but reservations are required. RSVP via e-mail to vpsa@miami.edu.
