STUDENT-RUN HEALTH FAIR BRINGS FREE MEDICAL CARE TO FLORIDA KEYS

Students at the School of Medicine are gearing up for the 30th Annual Florida Keys Health Fair, which provides free health screenings, exams, and immunizations for Keys residents. The health fair will be held in Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Key West on January 29. Free screenings include dermatology, breast exams, blood pressure, hearing, and vision, among others. TWIGGS JOINS UM SCHOOL OF MEDICINE FACULTY

The School of Medicine has recruited Leo B. Twiggs, M.D., as the new associate dean for women's health. Dr. Twiggs, former chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health at the University of Minnesota, will be in charge of coordinating all women's health services across the University's medical departments under an umbrella project known as the Women's Health Institute.

TELEVISION PERSONALITY LENDS IMAGE TO MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDY

Univision personality Cristina Saralegui, host of "Cristina," is the central image on recruitment cards for an HIV/AIDS bereavement study in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She is represented as an image of "the Hispanic woman and her health." Women who know someone with HIV or have lost someone to AIDS within the last six months are eligible for the study. Participants must speak English. For information on this and other HIV/AIDS studies, call 305-243-3290.

UMSM PEDIATRICS DOCTOR APPEARS ON "DATELINE NBC"

Alan Delamater, Ph.D., director of the Division of Psychology within the Department of Pediatrics, appeared on "Dateline NBC" last week regarding the Elian Gonzalez case. He discussed the issues of bereavement and on-going traumatic stress relating to Elian's separation from his family in Cuba and the constant media attention he has received in the United States.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CALLS FOR HEALTH CARE HERO NOMINATIONS

DEAN'S TOWN MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS FRIDAY

Join John Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, for an update on campus issues. The Dean's Town Meeting gives employees a chance to offer suggestions and voice their opinions. The next meeting is scheduled for this Friday, January 28, 8:30 a.m., Retter Auditorium, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

BASCOM PALMER OFFERS CONFERENCE OF RETINAL DISEASES

The clinical faculty of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute invites practicing physicians and UM employees to a subspecialty conference focusing on managing patients with retinal diseases. UM employees may attend at no charge. The conference, entitled "Trade Secrets: Retina Update," is scheduled for January 29, 8 a.m. - noon, Retter Auditorium, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
