DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY NAMES CHIEF OF INTERNAL DIVISION
Ajay Wakhloo, M.D., professor in the Department of Radiology, has been appointed
chief of the Division of Neuroendovascular Surgery and Interventional Neuroradiology.
Dr. Wakhloo's expertise covers the treatment of vascular diseases, diagnostic
and interventional procedures of the neurovascular system, diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures of spine and paraspinal structures, and neck lesions. He has contributed
to the development of various endovascular procedures, which are currently being
established in neurointerventional treatment.
GO ON-LINE WITH YOUR FALL 2000 COURSE PLANS
Add your fall semester courses to the growing number of University classes
with their own web sites at http://www.courses.miami.edu,
a database of various courses and descriptions. In a survey of current users
of the system, students enthusiastically supported the use of the web to distribute
class documents, make announcements, hold discussions, and more. The course
web sites are easy for faculty to create and maintain. For more information

PITCH IN TO HELP ADMINISTER CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENINGS
The Cardiovascular Center is seeking volunteers for "Legs for Life," an annual
Peripheral Vascular Screening held at various locations in Miami. Medical students
and nurses are needed to administer the tests, and training will be provided
prior to the event. A physician also will be available at each site to provide
assistance. Volunteer to help out at one of the following scheduled screenings:
September 18, 1 to 4 p.m., at the Daystar Clinic in Coral Gables; September
19, 1 to 4 p.m., at the Alamo; and September 21 and 22, 9 a.m. to noon, at the
UM Care Office in Kendall. For further information or to sign up, please call

MEDICAL CENTER UPDATE NEWSLETTER ASKS, "WHAT IS A STUDENT'S MOST IMPORTANT LESSON?"
As the 2000 academic year begins at the School of Medicine, fresh-faced students
abound on campus, on their way to absorbing volumes of information and becoming
the physicians and researchers of tomorrow. The September issue of your campus
newsletter will ask, "What is the most important thing a student can learn in
medical school?" Reply with your perspective as a patient, alumnus, or teacher

ETHICS CONFERENCE ADDRESSES RESEARCH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Dialogues in Research Ethics, a monthly conference series from the UM Ethics
Program, presents "Human Subjects in Developing Countries: Exploitation of Science,"
on August 25, noon, in the Pharmacology Conference Room (Rosenstiel 6018). This
seminar will discuss the ethics of human subjects research, along with economic,
regulatory, and cultural factors of research conducted in developing countries.
Anthony Mullings, D.M., deputy dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the
University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, will present the lecture
and address the question of how to balance the needs of science against the
risk of exploitation. Lunch will be provided, and all faculty and staff are

JOIN UM/JMH CLEFT LIP AND PALATE CLINIC AT UPCOMING MARLINS GAME
The UM/JMH Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic invites you to watch the Florida Marlins
face the Cincinnati Reds, August 26, 7:05 p.m., at ProPlayer Stadium. Tickets

SUPERVISORS: REGISTER NOW FOR REQUIRED TRAINING COURSE
If you are a manager or supervisor at the University of Miami, you are required
to attend training on federal laws and regulations governing supervisory responsibilities.
The Office of Professional Development and Training offers such a program, which
also develops or reinforces skills in handling difficult employees, completing
performance appraisals, and applying disciplinary procedures. The program, entitled
"Fundamentals of Supervision," consists of three modules: Employment Policies
and Procedures, September 7, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Progressive Discipline, September
12, 8:30 a.m. to noon; and Performance Appraisals, September 14, 8:30 a.m. to
noon. All sessions will be held at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. This
program is required for all supervisors. Employees who are not supervisors need

UPCOMING DEAN'S TOWN MEETING RE-SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER
The Dean's Town Meeting scheduled for August 25 has been postponed until September
