DEPARTMENT OF SECURITY
HAS CAUGHT MEDICAL CENTER PURSE SNATCHER
The Department of
Security apprehended the suspected purse snatcher who was preying on
individuals at the medical center last week. Although this culprit has
been caught, it is important to be aware of your personal safety and
security in all situations. For tips on how you can ensure your personal

REVIEW HR'S MILITARY LEAVE
NOTICE IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF U.S. MILITARY RESERVES
President George
W. Bush has authorized the Secretary of Defense to call 35,000 military
reservists to active duty on domestic military bases in response to
the September 11 terrorist attacks. If you are employed by the University
of Miami and are a reservist who may be called to active duty, please
review the Military Leave Notice at http://www.miami.edu/hr/militaryleave
for information pertaining to re-employment and benefits while on a
military leave of absence.
EMPLOYEES CHOSEN TO PARTICIPATE
CAN STILL MAIL COMPLETED SMOKING CESSATION SURVEY
Several employees
recently received a Smoking Cessation Survey from the Employee Assistance
Program. The original deadline for response of September 25 has been
extended to account for a late mailing of the surveys. If you received
a survey, please fill it out and return to the EAP as soon as possible.

ENJOY A DAY OF FANTASY
AT DISNEY WORLD AND SUPPORT THE UNITED WAY
The Department of
Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology is organizing a field trip to Walt
Disney World to benefit the United Way. A registration fee of $99 will
include transportation and a ticket to the park of your choice: Magic
Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, or Islands
of Adventure. The trip is scheduled for November 9, but your reservation
and payment must be received by October 31. A bus will depart from Mark
Light Stadium on the University's Coral Gables campus at 6 a.m., November
9, so you should arrive by 5:30 a.m. Broward residents should meet at
the Holiday Inn on Power Line Road (I-95, Exit 32) by 6 a.m. for a 6:30

A program of weekly
small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human
subjects in research continues October 2, with "Standards of Care and
Experimentation," presented by Stephen M. Cohn, M.D, professor of surgery,
noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center for Child Development, Room 3023.
Future seminars continue through November, featuring such topics as

"Assertiveness Training," a two-part course to be held on the University
of Miami's Coral Gables campus, beginning October 4, 2 to 4 p.m., in

The Miami Area Geriatric
Education Center will hold a nursing module, beginning October 5, and
continuing on the following two Fridays. To register for the course

TODAY FOR ADOLESCENT DRUG ABUSE CONFERENCE
The Center for Treatment
Research on Adolescent Drug Abuse presents a conference on cutting-edge
treatment approaches for adolescent drug abuse, October 12 - 13, at
the Omni Colonnade Hotel in Coral Gables. Leading scientists will discuss
various treatment modalities, offer treatment options for cultural and
gender issues, and answer questions. UM/Jackson faculty and staff can
attend the conference for $125, and continuing education credits are
available for an extra $25. A special rate of $45 is available for students
who wish to attend, but seating is limited, so students must call the
registration office to inquire about the offer's availability. The registration

due to misunderstanding or improper diagnosis. Join your Employee Assistance
Program at "Depression: What You Need to Know," and learn the signs
and symptoms of the condition, treatment modalities, and more. The seminar

ANNUAL EXTREME ETHICS CONFERENCE
TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
The Ethics Programs
of the University of Miami present "Extreme Ethics: Unusually Difficult
Challenges in Epidemiology and Human Subjects Research," October 18
- 20, at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel in Miami. The conference will
feature a one-day workshop on IRB standards, followed by a two-day program
to include topics like ethics and bioinformatics, research in genetically
isolated communities, and scientists as social advocates, among others.
The program will include lectures and interactive roundtable discussions.
Continuing education credits will be available for physicians, nurses,

UM/SYLVESTER BREAST CANCER
WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND ADVANCES
In recognition of
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Courtelis Center presents an all-day
workshop, "Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: The Millenium Update,"
October 23, at Sylvester Conference Room 1301. Topics of discussion
will include early diagnosis and prevention, genetic advancements, and
psychosocial issues, among others. UM/Jackson employees can attend for
$20; the cost is $60 for all others. Six contact hours will be provided
for nurses, social workers, and mental health counselors. Preregistration
