UM LABORATORIES RECEIVE
ACCREDITATION WITH DISTINCTION
UM's Pathology Specialty
Services (PSS) Laboratories have been awarded an accreditation "With
Distinction," presented to the top three percent of laboratories by
the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American
Pathologists (CAP). CAP inspectors examined the records and quality
control of the UM pathology labs for the past two years, along with
the education and qualifications of the staff, adequacy of the facilities,
equipment, and laboratory safety and management. PSS consists of laboratories
throughout the medical campus, specializing in areas such as cytopathology,
immunohistochemistry, molecular hematopathology, and renal pathology.
WELCOME INCOMING FRESHMEN
AT STUDENT/FACULTY MIXER THIS FRIDAY
School of Medicine
faculty members are invited to join the Class of 2005 at a student/faculty
mixer this Friday, August 17, 6 to 10 p.m. The University's Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key will host the
event, which will be held in "The Commons" on that campus. If you would

"Frontline Skills
for Service Excellence" provides employees with the opportunity to practice
telephone and face-to-face greetings, communication styles, listening
skills, and more. This course is aimed at employees who have primary
responsibility for service excellence in the workplace, and the class

NURTURE YOUR SOUL AND KICK
IT INTO GEAR TO FIGHT WORKPLACE FRUSTRATIONS
Psychological frustration
at work is often hidden, trivialized, or neglected. At "On the Job Training
for the Soul," presented by the Department of Wellness and Recreation,
you will learn how to acknowledge workplace frustrations and support
colleagues to promote a healthy environment. The course also will provide
you with spiritual tools to combat competitiveness, office politics,
and abuses of power. This is a two-session course, beginning August
16, noon to 1 p.m. at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. The second
installment will follow one week later, August 23, same time and location.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS TOPIC
OF INSERVICE PRESENTED BY UM/SYLVESTER EDUCATION
UM/Sylvester presents
"Domestic Violence Inservice," August 21, 8 to 9 a.m., in Sylvester
Conference Room 1301. One nursing contact hour is provided for the lecture.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE
TEACHES THE ART AND SCIENCE OF ACUPUNCTURE
Physicians will
learn to integrate advanced concepts of acupuncture into healthcare
practice and gain proficiency in this discipline at "The Art and Science
of Acupuncture," beginning September 8, with classes continuing through
February. Classes will be held at the Sieron Building on the medical
campus, and participants can attend as many of the course installments
as they wish. Tuition remission is available for University of Miami
employees. For other attendants, the complete series fee is $3,000,
and single classes range from $425 for shorter installments to $1,400
for extended courses. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Advanced Auricular
Acupuncture will be the main foci of the series, and a maximum of 150
credit hours can be earned. A $500 deposit for registration is due by
September 1, so sign up today by calling 305-243-2178.
EARN CERTIFICATION IN HEALTHCARE
BUSINESS OR INVESTMENTS AT CONTINUING STUDIES PROGRAM
The School of Continuing
Studies Koubek Center presents two programs of courses designed to train
participants in healthcare business practices and investments. "Business
in Healthcare" is a six-course program, each installment totaling fifteen
credit hours. "Investments" consists of five courses. Students in each
program will receive certificates upon completion, and it is possible
to enroll in both programs. Each course within the two programs costs
$375, but University of Miami employees are eligible for tuition remission
if the subject matter relates directly to the employee's position at
the University. Classes do not begin until September 17, but an open
house will be held September 8, 10 a.m., at the Koubek Center, 2705

DISCOVER THE FOUNTAIN OF
YOUTH AT OB/GYN'S MENOPAUSE SUPPORT SERIES
Register now for
the Menopause Support Series, presented by the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology. The series is a two-day interactive seminar that will
provide information on physical and emotional aspects of menopause,
along with education on the various therapeutic options available. The
course is geared toward middle-aged women who are beginning to deal
with the stresses of menopause. R. Wayne Whitted, M.D., assistant professor,
and Paul Pietro, M.D., assistant professor, along with Vicki Colburn,
R.N., all of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will conduct
the program on September 12 and 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, at Jackson's
Diagnostic Treatment Center, room 254 (September 12) and room 255 (September
13). The cost is $25 and seating is limited, so RSVP today. To reserve
