CARDIOVASCULAR CENTER
NAMES DR. DE MARCHENA AS NEW DIRECTOR
Eduardo De Marchena,
M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine, has been named director
of the Cardiovascular Center. The center is dedicated to research, prevention,
and treatment of cardiovascular disease, offering the latest technology
for diagnosis and treatment. Dr. De Marchena is ideal for the position,
in that he began the state's first accredited interventional cardiology
training program and leads a highly competent team of cardiologists.
DR. ROBERT MYERBURG TURNS
DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD INTO GIFT FOR UM COMMUNITY
Robert Myerburg, MD, professor
and director of the Division of Cardiology, was named the University of Miami's
2001 Distinguished Faculty Scholar. But Dr. Myerburg ended up giving the bigger
award back to the University. He handed his award check for $6,000 back to President
Edward T. Foote II to fund placement of defibrillators in all UM security vehicles.
Dr. Myerburg has devoted much of his career to fighting sudden cardiac death
and jumped at the chance to bring awareness and life-saving equipment to the

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE SENIOR
TAKES HOME FIRST PLACE AT NATIONAL RESEARCH FORUM
Elana Oberstein, a fourth-year
student at the School of Medicine, recently won the award for Best Internal
Medicine Presentation at the National Student Research Forum in Galveston, Texas.
After earning first place for the Best Clinical Oral Presentation at the Eastern
Student Research Forum, held at UM in February, Oberstein became the first School
of Medicine student to compete in the national competition. Her project, "Pulmonary
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM): A Case Series of 83 Women," studied the characteristics
of young women who suffer from LAM and helped establish a patient database for
the disease. Marilyn Glassberg, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary
and Critical Care Medicine, and Lora Fleming, MD, Ph.D., associate professor
in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, collaborated on the project.
After graduation in May, Oberstein will stay at Jackson Memorial Hospital for
a residency in internal medicine.
DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY RECEIVES
NCI GRANT FOR PREVENTION OF PROSTATE CANCER
The Department of Urology
recently received a twelve-year grant from the National Cancer Institute for
the prevention of prostate cancer. Edward Gheiler, MD, assistant professor in
the Department of Urology, will lead the study as its principal investigator
and head efforts geared toward education and prevention of the disease. The
department cites its commitment to academic excellence and highly specialized
patient care as the tools necessary to receive such nationally recognized awards.

ANNOUNCES NEW ADDRESS
The Sponsored Programs
Offices within the Controller's Office at the School of Medicine have
moved to a new location. The relocation includes the following: John
Dow, assistant controller for sponsored programs and cost studies, the
Expenditure Compliance Office, headed by Richard Williams, and the Post
Award Financial Office, headed by Aurora Candelaria. The new address
is The Institute, Annex Building, 1611 N.W. 12th Avenue, 3rd floor,
Miami, FL 33136. Phone numbers have not changed but the new fax number
is 305-325-3072.
NOTICE: ACCOUNTING OFFICES
WITHIN UMHC/SYLVESTER ANNOUNCE RELOCATION
The UMHC/Sylvester
General Accounting and Patient Accounting Offices have moved to Coral
Gables. The new address is Gables One Tower, 1320 South Dixie Highway,
Suite 500, Coral Gables. Phone numbers and locator codes for both offices
remain the same.
BOOKSTORE AT SCHOOL OF
MEDICINE HOLDS APRIL SALE
The April Showers Sale will
be held at the Medical Bookstore until April 29. There will be new, old, and
out of print books at up to a 75 percent discount and 15 percent off selected

DIALOGUE IN RESEARCH ETHICS
PRESENTS CONFERENCE ON RELIGION AS A MEDICAL VARIABLE
Religious beliefs have mixed
effects on medical practice. Some religious groups either restrict or deny conventional
medical therapy. Anecdotal and controlled experiments indicate that religious
beliefs also can influence therapy and facilitate healing. Fred M. Frohock,
Ph.D., professor of political science in the Maxwell School at Syracuse University
and vice president of the Institute for Ethics in Health Care, will discuss
the conceptual difficulties in these studies and catalog them in terms of their
implications for medical practice. The conference will be held on April 27,
noon, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Room 207. Lunch will be provided.

CHOICES SEMINAR SERIES
PRESENTS LECTURE ON FORENSIC DNA ANALYIS
The CHOICES seminar
series will present a lecture on forensic DNA analysis by FBI Supervisory
Special Agent Jenifer A.L. Smith, Ph.D., on April 27, 3 p.m., in the
Rosenstiel building's fourth floor lecture hall. Dr. Smith, chief of
the FBI's DNA Analysis Unit, is an expert in forensic serology and forensic
DNA analysis. Her presentation also will include a discussion of scientific
careers in the FBI. The CHOICES seminar series is sponsored by the Biomedical
Graduate Student Association and the Office of Graduate Studies, and
is designed to expose biomedical Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows
to a variety of career options in the sciences.
UM FOOTBALL TAKES ON COMMUNITY
ALL-STARS TO BENEFIT YOUTH PROGRAMS
For the ninth year
in a row, the University of Miami football team will take on the Community
Business All-Stars and UM Coaches in a softball game to benefit youth
programs in Deerfield Beach. The event will take place April 28, at
the Deerfield Beach Middle School baseball complex, 701 S.E. 6th Avenue.
Pre-game activities will begin at 5 p.m. and the first pitch will be

17th Annual Club Med Corporate Walk/Run on May 3, 6:45 p.m., at Bayfront Park
in Miami. Last year UM had a record 431 participants and the women's, men's,
and co-ed teams claimed first place in the Educational Division. This is one

EAP BRINGS ASSERTIVENESS
TRAINING TO MEDICAL CAMPUS
The Employee Assistance
Program brings you "Assertiveness Training," a four-session course designed
to help you identify your personal communication style and develop assertive
techniques. The class will be held from noon to 1 p.m., on four consecutive
Fridays, beginning May 4, at the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155.
Another session will be held consecutive Mondays, beginning May 8. Nurses
and masters level licensed mental health professionals can earn four

CELLULAR THERAPIES AND
TISSUE ENGINEERING INITIATIVE HOLDS CONFERENCE
The mission of the
UM Cellular Therapies and Tissue Engineering Initiative is to promote
the development and translation of novel molecular and cellular therapies
into clinical application. The initiative will promote interdisciplinary
research in biomedical applications and technologies that are associated
with biologic replacement, tissue repair and engineering tissue. The
