UM BOARD OF TRUSTEES TAPS NEW MEMBERS

The Board of Trustees has elected the following new members: Bernard Kosar, Jr., senior vice president of Precision Response Corporation and former Hurricane quarterback, Dr. Rudolph Moise, president and CEO of The Comprehensive Health Center, Judith Prokop Newman, manager of The Newman Family Foundation, and Jorge Perez, president of The Related Group of Florida. In addition, Jorge Gomez, first vice president of Investments for Paine Webber, and Gino Torretta, financial advisor for Prudential Securities and former Hurricane quarterback, will become UM trustees next month. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PSYCHIATRIST RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD

Jose Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor and director of the Center for Family Studies in the University of Miami School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will be honored with the Presidential Award from the Society for Prevention Research at the organization's annual meeting in Montreal on June 1 - 3. Dr. Szapocznik was selected for the award based on his Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT), a family intervention method for adolescents, which has been successful in many randomized trials.

PROFESSOR OF PEDIATRICS FEATURED IN HERALD ARTICLE ABOUT "PREEMIES"

A recent Miami Herald article, "Two Generations of Miracles," discusses "second generation" premature babies, whose parents also were premature. The story follows one young mother who was treated at the medical center's Project: Newborn Neonatal Special Care Center when she was born prematurely, and who saw her premature son treated at the same facility 22 years later. Ilene Sosenko, M.D., professor and associate director for clinical development and outreach in the Division of Neonatology, was featured in the article. UMSM ASSOCIATE DEAN LENDS EXPERT OPINION TO HERALD ARTICLE

The Florida State Legislature is reviewing a plan to grant one third of the $1.7 million Lawton Chiles Tobacco Endowment Fund to go toward research of tobacco-related diseases, according to an article in The Miami Herald last week. Richard Bookman, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, director of the M.D./Ph.D. program, and associate dean for graduate studies, was quoted in the article, "State Ponders Investing in Science to Raise Profile," and stated that Florida's current biomedical research enterprise is too small in relation to the size and population of the state. WOMEN'S HEALTH FAIR AT JACKSON POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER

The Women's Health Fair to be held at Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center on June 10 has been postponed until September. The free cholesterol screenings, about which details were provided in the last issue of e-Update, have likewise been postponed. Stay tuned to e-Update for the rescheduled date of the Health Fair.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AT THE DEAN'S TOWN MEETING THIS FRIDAY
