AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION HONORS DR. DAVID GORDON FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

David Lee Gordon, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Neurology and director of emergency medical skills training at the Center for Research in Medical Education, received the Award of Meritorious Achievement at the American Heart Association's (AHA) 2000 Delegate Assembly and Leadership Conference, held June 23 in Dallas. Dr. Gordon was recognized for his distinguished service to advance the AHA's national programs in stroke, including efforts to promote awareness, prevention, and treatment. He was one of five recipients selected, and the only physician recognized in the area of stroke. The organization gives the Award of Meritorious Achievement each year to individuals who render an important service in the development of national programs, and award winners are viewed as leaders or major contributors to AHA initiatives. Dr. Gordon has been involved with the AHA since 1993, and served as vice-president, president-elect, and president of the association's Mississippi Affiliate from 1995-98.

HERALD ARTICLE FEATURES DR. THOMAS BALKANY AND THREE SIBLINGS WITH COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

An article in the Miami Herald last week profiled three children from the same family who have received cochlear implants at the School of Medicine, a rarity that Thomas Balkany, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology, says he and fellow faculty members have never encountered before. Dr. Balkany performed the surgeries for all the children's implants, the most recent on the family's youngest child Gina, who is almost two years old.
