KAISER FOUNDATION HEALTH FORUM
As part of the Presidential Debate Lecture Series leading up to this year’s
election, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and the School of Medicine
are presenting “Why Care, Why Vote? What’s at Stake for Health
in Election 2004,” Tuesday, September 14 in the Lois Pope LIFE Center
seventh-floor auditorium. Dean John G. Clarkson will open the event, which
will feature Judy Feder, Ph.D., professor and dean of the Georgetown Public
Policy Institute, Georgetown University; Diane Rowland, Sc.D., executive vice
president, Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and executive director, Kaiser
Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured; and Bruce Vladeck, Ph.D., professor
of health policy and geriatrics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Moderators
are UM President Donna E. Shalala and CNN Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta,
M.D. Seats are reserved for selected first- and second-year medical students

MACHINE DEMONSTRATION AND VOTER REGISTRATION COME TO MEDICAL CAMPUS
Also on Tuesday, September 14, representatives from the Miami-Dade County Elections
Department will be on the medical campus to demonstrate new touch-screen
voting machines. The county is demonstrating the machines to make sure voters
are comfortable with the voting process and training will be available in
English, Spanish, and Creole. Representatives will also answer any questions
about the voting process and help register those who are eligible to vote.

DALAI LAMA LECTURES
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzen Gyatso will lead a series of teachings
on Buddhist spiritual practices at the University’s Convocation Center,
1245 Walsh Avenue, Coral Gables, on Monday, September 20, and Tuesday, September
21. It will be the first time that he conducts these particular teachings,
which include “Teachings on the Instructions on the Garland of Views
and Long Life Empowerment.” These teachings are open to the public
and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
The Dalai Lama will also address the University community on the topic
of "A Human Approach to World Peace" at 3 p.m. on Wednesday,
September 22 at the UM Convocation Center on the Coral Gables campus. The
Dalai Lama's visit is part of "Celebrating American Democracy and
Diversity," a series of events leading up to the presidential debate.
This event is open only to UM students, faculty, staff, and special guests.
A limited number of tickets are available for employees and will be distributed
through a lottery. Staff attendance requires a supervisor’s approval
and the use of accrued vacation/floating holiday time to remain in pay
status. To sign up for the lottery, log on to the EASY
system by 5 p.m. Wednesday and follow the "Lottery" prompt
located on the "My Employee Menu" under "Other Employee
Functions." The day and time you register does not affect your chances
in the lottery. Winners will receive one (1) ticket and will be notified
via their registered e-mail address. Winners will be required to present
picture ID, preferably a 'Cane Card, along with their ticket to gain entry
into the Convocation Center. For security purposes, no large purses, backpacks,
cameras, video recorders, audio recorders or cell phones will be permitted.
ONLINE HIPAA TRAINING FOR PHYSICIANS
The University of Miami Ethics Programs and the Office of Continuing Medical
Education are offering a series of health information privacy and
security courses online for physicians who need to meet the training requirements
of HIPAA, state statutes, JCAHO certification and other mandates. Physicians
can earn up to 10 AMA PRA category 1 credits while becoming familiar
with the most current federal and state privacy requirements. While
access to all course materials is free and unlimited, CME credit requires
a registration fee of $100. To complete these online courses, go

SECURITY AWARENESS UPDATE: A WORD ON PASSWORDS
Our systems require the use of passwords to access the various networks and
applications across our campus. Your password is unique to you and should
be kept secret. Avoid using familiar names or personal information as your
password. Passwords should not be written down and left where they are easily
accessible. Do not attach them to your computer screen or leave them under
your keyboard where anyone may be able to access them. Never give your password
to anyone. If you do, keep in mind that you will be held responsible for
any actions taken while your username and password are being used. If you
suspect your password has been compromised please change it immediately.
The Office of HIPAA Privacy and Security will send out periodic updates and
reminders through e-Update. Should you have any questions or concerns, please

NEW DESIGN FOR NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION
New Employee Orientation has been redesigned to better meet the needs of new
hires, regulatory compliance, and the University as a whole. The first session
with the revised program will begin on September 15 for new employees on
the medical campus. For new hires on Coral Gables and Rosenstiel campuses,
the program redesign will commence on September 27. Please note that as of
those dates, Gables/Rosenstiel new hires must attend orientation on the Gables
campus, and medical campus employees need to attend the session on the medical

2004 UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICKOFF
The 2004 United Way Campaign will kick off with a special event Wednesday,
September 15, from 11 a.m. to noon, in the Mailman Center eighth-floor auditorium.
John G. Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean,
Bernard J. Fogel, M.D., the medical school’s campaign leader, and Debra
Durant, the medical school’s United Way Ambassador, will be on hand
to discuss the goals for this year’s campaign. The event is open to

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Joseph Lucci, III, M.D., co-leader, Gynecologic Cancer Site Disease Group,
and professor and director, Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the School
of Medicine, will talk about “Ovarian Cancer – Symptoms and Treatment,” as
part of the Conversations about Cancer series on Tuesday, September 14, from
noon to 1 p.m. at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, 1192 East Newport Center

CENTER ON AGING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS
September is “National Health in Aging Month,” and UM’s Center
on Aging will mark the occasion with several events. On September 15, Robert
H. Binstock, Ph.D., professor of aging, health and society at Case Western
Reserve University, will discuss “The Aging Society: Ethical and Policy
Challenges," at noon in the Hurricane 100 Room of the UM Convocation Center
on the Coral Gables campus. Dr. Binstock is the former president of the Gerontological
Society of America and served as director of a White House task force on older
Americans. A luncheon will follow, and reservations are required.
On Saturday, September 18, the Center on Aging will be highlighted at the ‘Canes/Louisiana
Tech game at 1 p.m., and on Friday, September 24, faculty and staff are invited
to a scientific research session on aging in room 3028 of the Mental Health
Hospital Center at the corner of N.W. 17th Street and 9th Avenue. The session
is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and lunch will be served. Immediately following lunch,
Len Duhl, Ph.D., professor of public health and urban planning in the School
of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, will lecture on “Healthy
Cities, Healthy Aging,” as part of the Isabel Gadsby Lectureship on Positive

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE SEMINARS ON PARENTING AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Employee Assistance Program will present S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training
for Effective Parenting), a discussion group for parents of school- age children.
Participants will learn effective and enjoyable ways to communicate with
their children, moving toward their goal of raising responsible children
who will grow into responsible adults. The group will meet once a week from
noon to 1 p.m. for eight sessions in Room 6012 of the Diabetes Research Institute.
Meeting dates are: September 7, September 14, September 21, September 28,
October 5, October 12, October 19 and October 26.
EAP will also host a free “Lunch and Learn” seminar on domestic
violence from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Professional Development
and Training Office, Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. Geared toward
nurses, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical
social workers and psychologists, the sessions will help participants understand
the prevalence of domestic violence and how it affects people, screen patients
for domestic violence history, respond to patients who are abused or abusers,
and provide helpful resources. Participants will receive one hour of continuing
education credit and meet the domestic violence course requirements for
their profession. Lunch will be served.
Another seminar conducted by EAP will focus on Managing Your Teen’s
Behavior. The seminar is designed to provide simple and effective
discipline strategies to parents, and will be especially helpful to busy
working parents. Parents will be provided with a framework for developing
and implementing discipline, as well as strategies for motivating teens
to act responsibly. The seminar will be held on the medical campus on
Thursday, September 30, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., in room 155 of the Dominion

The Professional Development and Training Office has implemented a new
online registration system to access the training calendars, enroll in
a session, un-enroll, and view and print your transcript. Go to http://netlearning.miami.edu where
you’ll find instructions and a brief tutorial. You need your
UM identification number ("C number") and birth date to access

e-Canes Travel is the new UM business and personal travel reservation tool
available to all faculty and staff, providing the most time- and cost-effective

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The SPARE Study (Soy Phytoestrogens As Replacement Estrogen) is currently recruiting
women between 45-58 years of age to study the role of soy phytoestrogens
given in tablet form to prevent bone loss. Participants will be given a physical
exam at study entry, an annual mammogram and bone density test, and will
be asked to come for 10 study visits over a period of two years for blood
tests and to complete questionnaires about diet, exercise, and well-being.

MELANOMA WORKSHOP
The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Richard
David Kann Melanoma Foundation are co-hosting a melanoma lecture workshop
on Saturday, September 18, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Boca
Raton Hotel. "Skin Cancer Detection, Prevention and Education: Shedding
New Light on Behavior Modification and Medical Advances,” is a free
workshop and will include a lecture on clinical trials by Lynn G. Feun, M.D.,
co-leader of the Melanoma and Related Skin Cancers Site Disease Group at
UM/Sylvester, and a discussion on new diagnostic tools by Harold Rabinovitz,
M.D., voluntary professor, Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: “A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO INFECTIOUS
DISEASES”
Fighting Infectious Diseases in Emerging Countries, a non-profit organization
founded by Daniel Stamboulian, M.D., along with the UM School of Medicine Infectious
Diseases Division, headed by Gordon Dickinson, M.D., will hold the Second International
Symposium, “A Practical Approach to Infectious Diseases,” at the
Trump International Sonesta Beach Resort in Sunny Isles September 26 through
28. The conference will offer updated information on the diagnosis, prevention
and management of infectious diseases to primary care practitioners and ancillary
staff members in internal medicine, pediatrics and family medicine. Besides
the schedule program, there will be workshops and discussion groups on topics
such as travel medicine and adult immunization, severe sepsis, chronic hepatitis,

MAGEC ETHNO-GERIATRIC CONFERENCE
The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and the Miami VAMC GRECC
will host the MAGEC Ethno-Geriatric Conference, “Our Multi-Cultural
Aging Communities: Clinical & Legal Realities,” October 14 and
15 at the Doubletree Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay in Miami. As the older population
increases it will also grow more diverse, reflecting the demographic changes
in the U.S. population as a whole over the past century. This educational
event will focus on the healthcare and legal implications of serving a multi-ethnic

MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Jenny Mladenovic, M.D., vice-chair of the Department of Medicine and chief

2004 ACS INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH GRANT
The American Cancer Society Institutional Grant is providing funds for meritorious
cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other funding mechanisms.
The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed funds for the initiation
of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior faculty members. Applicants
must not have had any peer reviewed funding. An award of $20,000 is available
