UMSM PSYCHIATRIST ADDRESSES VIOLENCE IN CHILDREN'S MOVIES ON HEALTH WEB SITE

Jon Shaw, M.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, contributed to a recent article about G-rated movies on WebMD, an Internet health site. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found an average of 9.5 minutes of violence in 74 animated G-rated movies. The study's authors believe that G-ratings on children's movies may give parents a false sense of security about a film's content. Dr. Shaw, however, says that the movies can teach life lessons about defending oneself against bullies and that children need to learn to protect themselves against aggressive behavior.
