LOCAL CELEBRITIES BAG YOUR GROCERIES TO BENEFIT AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

Winn-Dixie stores in Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties present "Celebrity Baggers Day 2000," on April 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Local celebrities and entertainers will bag groceries to help raise awarenessÛand proceedsÛfor the American Cancer Society (ACS). Winn-Dixie will donate five percent of the day's sales to the ACS to support the Winn-Dixie Hope Lodge, a residence where cancer patients and their families stay for free while receiving outpatient treatment. UM/Sylvester faculty will participate, along with local personalities, such as Deanna Lites, D.P.M., health reporter for CBS WFOR Channel Four.

MEDICAL STUDENT HONORED FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO WOMEN'S HEALTH

Heather Kramm, senior at the School of Medicine, recently received the Louise P. Mills Award from the University of Miami Women's Commission in recognition of her contributions to the enhancement of women. Kramm, who is ranked in the top five percent of her class, has served as president of the University of Miami Medical Women Organization, sponsoring programs on such women's health issues as breast cancer awareness. She plans to study internal medicine and complete a fellowship in women's health.

HERALD ARTICLE FEATURES UM DOCTOR'S DISCUSSION OF INNOVATIVE OB/GYN PROCEDURE

Ana Echenique, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Radiology, was quoted in a Miami Herald article about alternatives to hysterectomies. The article, titled "Growing Hope, Shrinking Fibroid Tumors," offered information on embolization, a procedure which uses a catheter to shoot tiny plastic particles into the uterine artery to shrink common noncancerous growths in the uterus known as fibroid tumors. Fibroids are the number one cause of hysterectomies. In the article, Dr. Echenique discussed the rationale behind the procedure and its benefit to patients. UMCARE EDUCATION SERIES KICKS OFF WITH PRESENTATION ON PROSTATE CANCER

Bruce Kava, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Urology, will present "Prostate Cancer Today: What you (and your partner) need to know about your prostate," the first installment in a UMCare Kendall health education series, on April 12 at 7 p.m. at the Miami-Dade Public Library, Kendall branch. The series, titled "A Word with the Doctor," is sponsored by an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc. Alternative medicine and incontinence will be addressed in future lectures.

UM DOCTOR PARTICIPATES IN WEB CHAT ON ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

Mark Multach, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of the Division of General Medicine, will discuss alternative medicine in an on-line chat on AmericasDoctors.com on April 13 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested in joining this discussion can log on to http://www.AmericasDoctor.com and click on "Upcoming Events." SEE 'CANES BASEBALL TAKE ON FLORIDA STATE FOR FREE

Admission is free for all faculty and staff of the University of Miami at the Hurricanes baseball game on Sunday, April 16. Come watch the defending national champion 'Canes take on the Florida State Seminoles at Mark Light Stadium on the Coral Gables campus. The game begins at 1 p.m. Ticket representatives will be on the medical campus on April 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in front of Au Bon Pain. Tickets also can be picked up at the Hurricane Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center on the Gables campus or at the stadium on game day. SYLVESTER OFFERS FREE HEAD AND NECK CANCER SCREENINGS

The University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will conduct free health screenings for head and neck cancer, including thyroid cancer, on April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in recognition of National Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. Head and neck cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, but is potentially deadly, especially among those who combine the use of tobacco and alcohol. Space is limited for these free screenings, so call 305-243-4302 to make an appointment.

FREE ANXIETY SCREENINGS TO BE CONDUCTED IN MAY

Physicians are now scheduling appointments for free anxiety screenings on May 3 in recognition of National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day. The screenings will be held at Dominion Tower and Mount Sinai Hospital and will include an educational presentation, screening questionnaire, confidential meeting with a mental health professional, and a referral, if appropriate.
