BATCHELOR CHILDREN'S RESEARCH
INSTITUTE DEDICATION PARKING AND TRAFFIC ADVISORY
The dedication of the Batchelor
Children's Research Institute is this Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. Approximately
500 invited guests are expected on campus that day, and measures have been taken
to minimize parking and traffic disruptions. Most event traffic will be concentrated
in the vicinity of N.W. 14th Street between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon. There
may be traffic delays at the exit ramps from 836 West and I-95 South. Please
note that N.W. 14th Terrace will be closed from N.W. 11th Avenue to Miami Subs.
All parking meters on N.W. 14th Terrace and N.W. 11th Avenue will be bagged
and out of operation from 6 p.m. on Wednesday until approximately 6 p.m. on
Thursday. While no parking garages will be closed, there may be heavy congestion
at the back entrance of Park West from around 7 a.m. until noon. Thank you for
your understanding and patience as the School of Medicine celebrates this important
milestone. Please
note that the luncheon is an invitation-only event.
FORENSIC DNA EXPERT VISITS
MEDICAL SCHOOL TO SPEAK ON OPTIONAL CAREERS IN MEDICINE
Last Friday, the
CHOICES seminar series featured FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jenifer
A.L. Smith, Ph.D. CHOICES, or Come Hear Optional Ideas Choosing Employment
in Science, is an organization created by the Biomedical Graduate Student
Association and the Office of Graduate Studies, and is designed to expose
biomedical Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows to a variety of career
options in the sciences. Dr. Smith, chief of the FBI's DNA Analysis
Unit, discussed different types of DNA forensic tests, as well as the
real-life drama involved with the evolution of DNA testing. She cited
an FBI publication that details the cases of individuals who were "convicted
by jury, exonerated by science." Twenty-six convicts to date have been
proven innocent, sometimes many years after they were found guilty,
due to advances in genetic testing. Dr. Smith also explained how the
smallest piece of evidence, from baseball caps to fingernail clippings,
yield DNA samples that can crack a criminal case. For more information
on the CHOICES seminar series, contact the Office of Graduate Studies
at 305-243-6406.
