WELCOME PRESIDENT SHALALA
AT UPCOMING BREAKFAST GATHERING
Join the School
of Medicine in welcoming President Donna E. Shalala at an informal gathering
on Tuesday, June 26, 8 to 10 a.m. The event will be held at the Schoninger
Research Quadrangle, and also will debut that new complex to medical
campus faculty and staff. Light breakfast will be available, and all
faculty and staff are invited to attend this exciting event, which will
feature a street fair atmosphere with clowns, music, and more. To give
everyone an opportunity to attend, it is suggested that each office
coordinate a rotation of employees in half-hour segments. There will
be no speeches or formal presentations, so no half-hour segment is preferential
to another. Please join in this special event.
NEW CURRICULUM TO BE ADDRESSED
AT OPEN MEETING ON JUNE 27
The implementation
of the School of Medicine's new integrated curriculum for August 2001
is on schedule, and efforts that began in 1996 with the school council's
task force on medical education are coming to fruition. As a medical
school striving for excellence, it is imperative that the school moves
forward with the modernization of its curriculum, promoting integration,
using active adult learning methodologies, and introducing new content
and skills required of physicians in the 21st century. The new curriculum
will be introduced to this fall's entering class of first-year students,
while students currently enrolled will continue to progress through
the existing curriculum. In order to provide updated information and
include interested faculty in this process, there will be monthly open
meetings where information and dialog will be shared. The steering committee,
module leaders, dean, and associate deans in medical education will
attend these meetings to hear from faculty and answer questions. The
next open meeting will be held on June 27 in the RMSB 5th floor auditorium
at 5 p.m. Your participation in this meeting and in all other aspects
of this exciting and important initiative is strongly encouraged.

FIRST INTERDEPARTMENTAL
ACADEMIC DAY FEATURED DISCUSSION ON ADDICTION MEDICINE
Several disciplines
came together recently for the School of Medicine's first Interdepartmental
Academic Day. The event, "Interdepartmental Addiction Medicine Academic
Day," was coordinated by the Behavioral Science Program within the Department
of Family Medicine & Community Health and fostered communication on
addiction medicine between faculty and staff from the Departments of
Family Medicine, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences. Some of the day's activities included lectures
from renowned guest speakers and a case-study panel discussion featuring,
among others, Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department
of Family Medicine; Penny Tenzer, M.D., assistant professor and vice
chair of the department; and Carl Eisdorfer, M.D., Ph.D., professor
and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences,
among others. The Behavioral Science Program is planning another Interdepartmental
Academic Day for this fall, to focus on "Sexual Issues in Medical Practice."
If your department is interested in participating in future academic
days, contact the event's coordinator Heidi Stanley, Ph.D., research
assistant professor and director of the Behavioral Science Program,
