UMHC IDX VM/HPA IMPLEMENTATION
A great deal of planning and effort has gone into the UMHC’s conversion
from the SMS Invision System to the IDX Visit Management/Hospital Patient Accounting
System. The implementation team, including Business Information Management
Systems, IDX, UMHC clinical and business managers, and the UMMG administrative
offices had every intention to go live on March 1. As you know, this is a challenging
year for the organization financially, and poses many more challenges as we
work on budgets for Fiscal Year, 2005. This and a sincere desire to have the
absolute best implementation possible are the factors that have just recently
led us to the decision to delay the implementation until June 1. It is very
important for everyone to understand that we will keep building on the extraordinary
momentum of everyone involved to date so that our June 1 go-live will be absolutely
seamless to all of us and to our patients. The original plan for the March
1 go-live included a rollout of the Open Referrals Module, a robust authorization
tracking system. This rollout will continue as planned and will be implemented
for both hospitals, as well as reinforced for the Physician Group users. Please
note that all IDX users impacted by this module will be contacted regarding
training in the near future. While we are all disappointed by having to delay
this important initiative, we trust that we can continue to count on your enthusiasm
and support for this project.
NEW PROTOCOL SUBMISSION FORMS FOR
HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH
The Human Subjects Research Office has revised all forms for the submission
of protocols to the University’s Institutional Review Boards. These new
forms go into effect on February 1. Please visit our website at http://www.miami.edu/hsro for
a preview of these forms in Adobe PDF format. Writable versions in Microsoft
Word will be available from our website on the effective date. For more information

REHABILITATION GRAND ROUNDS
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine presents Grand Rounds this Friday
with Paul Lento, M.D., assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation
at the Northwestern University Medical School Rehabilitation Institute, discussing
rotator cuff tendinopathy. Grand Rounds will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. in
the Jackson Rehabilitation Center, third-floor auditorium, and breakfast
will be provided. It is not necessary to RSVP but please call 305-585-1327

UM/SYLVESTER LAUNCHES $137 MILLION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
As part of Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami, UM/Sylvester
will launch its capital campaign with a private viewing of the Milhous Museum
in Boca Raton this Thursday, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The evening features
an insider's view of cancer research at UM/Sylvester and future scientific
and clinical plans as they relate to the capital campaign. To RSVP please

SAILABRATION OF LIFE WALKATHON AND HEALTH FAIR
Enjoy a brisk or leisurely walk, attend a health fair, and support cancer research
- all in one day at the Sailabration of Life Walkathon and Health Fair at
UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach this Saturday. The walk starts at 8:30 a.m.,
and the event is hosted by the Papanicolaou Corps for Cancer Research with
generous sponsorship from SeaEscape. Three walking routes are available to
accommodate all walkers - 1 mile, 1.5 mile, and 3 mile - traversing around
the Deerfield Beach facility. Registration is $15 which includes a light
breakfast, t-shirt, water, and access to the Health Fair. For more information

be accepted the day of the event.
The health fair is sponsored by UM/Sylvester and begins at 9 a.m. Scheduled
health screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol, oxygen saturation, and
head and neck cancer screenings. Educational presentations will also be given
by health care professionals on colon cancer, neurological cancer, lung cancer,
pain management, clinical trials, and genetics and cancer. Informational booths
will be hosted by UM/Sylvester, the Cancer Information Service, Nutritional
Services, Neurological Oncology, BeautyWise, and FORCE (Facing Our Risk of
Cancer Empowered).
ALS GOLF TOURNAMENT WITH FLORIDA MARLINS AS GUESTS
The University of Miami’s ALS Research Foundation is hosting its Eighth
Annual ALS Golf Classic to benefit research in ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)
this Saturday at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. The Florida Marlins will kick
off their annual fan caravan tour at our golf tournament. The caravan will
feature Marlins players, front office executives, Billy the Marlin, and the
World Series Trophy. You can play golf, sponsor a tee sign, provide an auction/raffle
item or send a donation and have an opportunity to meet the Marlins. Please

WEIGHT WATCHERS SESSION BEGINS AGAIN
The next 13-week session of this established weight loss program starts today.
Participants will meet for an hour every Tuesday at noon in ACC West, room
128. The whole program costs $118 and includes weigh-ins, lessons in how
and what to eat, and plenty of moral support. Participants are also encouraged

DISCUSSION GROUP FOR UM PARENTS OF TEENS
S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) is a parenting discussion
group that offers parents a realistic and practical approach to meeting the
challenges of raising teens today. Participants will learn how to understand
their teen’s behavior and methods to improve listening, talking and
discipline. The group will meet every Thursday for eight weeks, from this
Thursday through March 18, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Dominion Garage suite

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
Are you feeling anxious or depressed or exhibiting troubling behaviors? The
Department of Psychiatry's Division of Complementary & Integrative Medicine
and University of Miami Behavioral Health are sponsoring group sessions to
address individual issues. The group, called Transitions, will meet every
Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for 10 weeks in Dominion Tower Room 412, and will
be facilitated by Janet Konefal, Ph.D., M.P.H., C.A. Sessions are free to
all University employees. Dr. Konefal will be incorporating the newest technology
of change, Meta-Energetics, which has been dubbed the 'future of psychotherapy.'

TIME MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
The Employee Assistance Program, in conjunction with United HealthCare and
Optum, is pleased to bring you a lunchtime seminar on time management, Wednesday,

and priorities, how to identify time wasters, time management principles,
decision making and time allocation techniques. The seminar will be held

HURRICANES HOOPS ACTION
This is Hurricane Hoops Employee Appreciation Week! All full-time employees
can purchase $1 tickets to the women’s basketball game tomorrow against
Notre Dame and the men’s basketball game this Saturday against Georgetown.
Each UM employee (with valid ID) will receive one ticket free and can purchase
up to five additional tickets for $1 each. Employees will also receive food
and merchandise discounts at these games. Any employee who gets all 12 tickets
(two free and 10 purchased) will also get a free t-shirt while supplies last.
Tickets are available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the medical campus today

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Madhav Dhodapkar, M.D., Head of the Laboratory of Tumor Immunology and Immunology
and assistant professor at The Rockefeller University in New York, will present “Tumor-Immune
Interactions: Patients with Monoclonal Gammopathies,” in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301 on February 13 from noon to 1 p.m. This didactic lecture
series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational researchers
to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the series is to bring
basic science and clinical researchers together to discuss recent advances

TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE
Register now for the 36th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology
and Neurology, February 13 to 15 at the Hyatt Regency Miami. The conference
is a primary care update presented by the Center for Research in Medical
Education focusing on needs in managed care, especially bedside skills training.

LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on
Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center
room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers'
Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received
grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator
