HUSBAND MAKES HIS WIFE THE 2000th KIDNEY TRANSPLANT AT UM/JACKSON

The University of Miami Transplant Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital celebrated a special milestone on November 20, in recognition of Jackson's 2000th kidney transplant. Cheryl Sonin, a 41-year old mother of two from Boca Raton, received the monumental transplant on November 8 and was on-hand at the celebration last week. Gaetano Ciancio, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Surgery, removed Sonin's husband's kidney, which was a rare match, using a minimally invasive laparascopic procedure. The kidney was then transplanted into Cheryl by Joshua Miller, M.D., professor and director of the Division of Kidney and Pancreas Trasplantation. For more on this remarkable story and the history of kidney transplantation at UM/Jackson, look for the upcoming December issue of Medical Center Update.
