OFFICE OF RESEARCH SPONSORED PROGRAM SEMINAR
The Office of Research will be presenting a sponsored program seminar on Thursday
from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s Retter Auditorium.
Topics to be discussed include new NIH modular grant procedures, new NIH
forms, which were revised in September, and an e-commons update. For more

CHILD CAR SEAT INSTALLATION CHECK
Do you know most child car seats are not installed correctly? To ensure that
your child car seat is installed correctly, a Certified Child Passenger Safety
Technician will be available on Wednesday, November 17, December 8 and 15
in front of the Mailman Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is available
to everyone who transports children under the age of 12 in their vehicle.

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for November will feature Kenneth
Goodman, Ph.D., discussing “Ethics, Computers and Research.” The
seminar will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30,
at the Mailman Center, room 3023. Advance registration is required as

FACULTY SENATE MEETING
There will be a Faculty Senate meeting on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Hurricane

MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS AND WORKSHOP
Paul Barach, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of anesthesiology, director
of the Miami Center for Patient Safety, and associate dean for patient safety
and quality improvement, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand
Rounds Friday at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fifth floor.
Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. Barach’s presentation is “Medical
education training that produces safe and reflective practitioners—can
it be done?” Dr. Barach will help his audience understand the role
of reflective learning and mindful practice in achieving professional competence,
why system-based care can help teach Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education competencies, as well as the role of team training in creating

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
Francisco J. Civantos, M.D., associate professor of otolaryngology, will talk
about “Photodynamic Therapy for Superficial Head and Neck Cancer,” as
part of the Conversations about Cancer series on Wednesday, November 24, from
noon to 1 p.m. at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, 1192 East Newport Center

REASSESS, RELAX AND REJUVENATE: A PRE-HOLIDAY STRESS BUSTER
This interactive EAP seminar will help participants explore options for dealing
with the sources of stress and review tips for managing holiday stress. Participants
will also have the opportunity to practice stress management exercises, including
meditation, visualization and progressive relaxation. The seminar will be
held on Tuesday, December 7, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Dominion

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Kanti R. Rai, M.D., professor and chief of hematology/oncology at the Long
Island Jewish Medical Center, will present “Advances in Chronic Lymphocytic
Leukemia (CLL)” as part of the UM/Sylvester Distinguished Lecture Series
in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301 on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. After
attending this session, attendees should be able to practice the new developments
in molecular prognostic markers in CLL, understand the pathophysiology of
CLL, and describe the method of therapeutic approach in CLL. Lunch will be

NEUROSCIENCE CENTER SEMINAR SERIES
Eric A. Newman, Ph.D., Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Department
of Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota, will present “Conversations
between Glia and Neurons in the Retina: Modulation of Neuronal Excitability.” The
seminar will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Lois Pope LIFE Center
seventh-floor auditorium. This lecture series is sponsored by the Neuroscience
Center, the School of Medicine and the Office of the Provost. An informal reception

FACULTY SENATE TOWN HALL MEETING FOR SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
The Faculty Senate is the body that represents the faculty in University governance. The

Part of the Conversations about Cancer series, this informal question and answer

DEAN’S PATIENT SAFETY COLLOQUIUM SERIES
The Dean’s Patient Safety Colloquium Series presents Donna Woods, Ph.D.,
discussing “Communication, Coordination, and Accountability in Pediatric
Patient Safety.” Dr. Woods is a National Research Scholars Award Fellow
at the Institute for Health Services Research and Policy Studies in the Feinberg
Medical School at Northwestern University. Dr. Woods’ current research
focuses on issues of patient safety, particularly pediatric patient safety.
She is a current member of the Steering Committee of the Chicago Patient Safety
Forum. The lecture will be held on Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the eighth
floor auditorium at the Mailman Center. Lunch will be provided and advance
registration is required. Physicians will be able to receive 1 CME credit.

SOUTH FLORIDA SPINAL CORD INJURY MODEL SYSTEM INFORMATIONAL TOUR
The South Florida Spinal Cord Injury Model System presents an informational
tour, where participants will receive information regarding the Spinal Cord
Injury Out-Patient Clinic at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, meet
and ask questions of investigators at the Miami VA SCI Center of Excellence,
participate in a formal presentation on the latest research outcomes at the
Lois Pope LIFE Center/The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and learn more
about the community outreach programs for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
The tour will meet at the Jackson Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center

UM EMPLOYEE BASKETBALL DAY
UM Employee Day at the Convocation Center will be Sunday, December 12, when
the Hurricane men’s basketball team hosts the Massachusetts Minutemen
at 2 p.m. All full-time University of Miami employees are eligible to
receive one complimentary ticket and can purchase up to five additional tickets
for $1 each with a valid employee ID. Ticket sales representatives will
be available outside of Au Bon Pain from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November
30 and December 7, and Thursday, December 2 and 9. Tickets also can be purchased
at the Hurricane Ticket Office in the Hecht Athletic Center. Please

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON BLOOD MANAGEMENT
The Division of Continuing Medical Education invites faculty and staff to a
two-day symposium about blood management and blood conservation strategies
Saturday and Sunday at the Fontainebleau Hilton Resort in Miami Beach. This

UM/SYLVESTER BRAMAN FAMILY BREAST CANCER INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENTAL
GRANT PROGRAM
The Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute of the Sylvester Comprehensive
Cancer Center has funds are available to support one year pilot projects in the
amount of $50,000 to encourage the development of new research directed toward
basic, translational and clinical research in breast and ovarian cancers. Support
from the Women’s Cancer League allows the institute to fund projects of
relevance to ovarian cancer in this round of grant funding. Graduate students
and post-doctoral fellows early in their career are not eligible. Deadline for

TEACHING CONFERENCE ON HEART & STROKE – EMPHASIZING
WOMEN’S HEALTH
Registration is open for the 37th Annual Teaching Conference in Clinical Cardiology
and Neurology, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 28-29, 2005 at the
Hyatt Regency in Miami. The conference is a primary care update presented by
the Center for Research in Medical Education. This year’s focus is heart
disease and stroke in women. UM physician assistants, nurse practitioners and
nurses can register for a reduced fee of $100 ($150 for UM physicians). CME
credit and nurse contact hours can be earned up to a maximum of 15.5 hours.
Tuition remission is available, awarded on a first-come first-served basis.
The conference features a variety of School of Medicine faculty, led by Michael
S. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., David Lee Gordon, M.D., S. Barry Issenberg, M.D., and
Joan Baker, R.N., M.S.N., C.C.R.N., C.N.R.N. Also presenting are visiting professors

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The HPV vaccine has been developed in hopes of decreasing HPV infection
and the persistence of HPV risk types responsible for cervical cancer.
We are looking for healthy women between the ages of 15 to 25 who have
not had prior abnormal pap smears, are not pregnant, are willing to receive
the study vaccine, and are able to commit to a four year follow-up period.

The SPARE Study (Soy Phytoestrogens As Replacement Estrogen) is currently
recruiting women between 45-58 years of age to study the role of soy phytoestrogens
given in tablet form to prevent bone loss. Participants will be given a
physical exam at study entry, an annual mammogram and bone density test,
and will be asked to come for 10 study visits over a period of two years
for blood tests and to complete questionnaires about diet, exercise, and
