UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Gerard Evan, Ph.D., of the University of California, San Francisco
Cancer Center and Cancer Research Institute, will be presenting “Determining
the Requirements for Tumor Maintenance in vivo” as part of
the UM/Sylvester Distinguished Lecture Series in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301 on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. This didactic
lecture series provides a forum for outstanding clinical and translational
researchers to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The focus of the
series is to bring basic science and clinical researchers together
to discuss recent advances in the understanding and treatment of

FREE ORAL, HEAD AND NECK CANCER SCREENINGS
In recognition of Yul Brynner’s Head and Neck Research Foundation’s
Oral, Head And Neck Cancer Awareness Week, the Sylvester Comprehensive
Cancer Center is offering free screenings to detect cancers of the
mouth, throat, thyroid, and other areas of the head and neck this Thursday
from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Radiation/Oncology Head & Neck
Clinic at UM/Sylvester. Early detection, via this quick and painless
screening exam, can save your life. The screening is free, but space

WINNIE THE POOH SNEAK PREVIEW FOR UM ONLY
Feld Entertainment has provided the University with a unique and exciting
opportunity: three free special engagements of the brand new Disney
Live! stage show, “Winnie the Pooh and The Perfect Day,” at
the UM Convocation Center on Wednesday, April 28, Friday, April 30,
and Saturday, May 1. UM employees and faculty are encouraged to bring
their children and be a part of this Disney Live! experience. Tickets
can be picked up in advance on the medical campus tomorrow and Thursday
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Au Bon Pain. A University ID is
required to receive tickets, and there is a four (4) ticket limit.
Doors to the UM Convocation Center open at 3 p.m., and the shows
begin promptly at 4 p.m. Each performance is limited to the first
2,500 guests, and faculty and staff may share their tickets with

ANNUAL TRAVEL FAIR COMES TO MEDICAL CAMPUS
The Travel Management Department will host its annual Travel Fair from
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Thursday in the seventh-floor auditorium of
the Lois Pope LIFE Center. The fair features representatives from
the authorized travel agencies, airline carriers, local and domestic
hotels, and car rental companies offering information about their
services. There will be a raffle and some prizes available for participants
(past items have included free domestic airfare, hotel stays, and
dinners at South Florida restaurants). For additional information,

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CANCER SERIES
W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., F.A.C.S., director, UM/Sylvester, and medical
director of UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, will present “Head
and Neck Cancer” at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach on Thursday,
April 29, from noon to 1 p.m. The Deerfield Beach facility is located
at1192 East Newport Center Drive, Suite 100. Dr. Goodwin’s
presentation, part of the Conversations about Cancer series, is free,

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for April will feature Roberto
Dominguez, M.D., of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Dominguez will discuss “The Therapeutic Misconception.” The
seminar will be held on Tuesday, April 27, at the Mailman
Center, room 3023, from noon to 1 pm. Advance registration

WOMEN IN MEDICINE DAY
Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will be the special guest speaker
at Women in Medicine Day on Saturday. Presented by The Miami Medical
Women’s Association, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and UM/JMH
Institute for Women’s Health, the event will take place at
10 a.m. at the Miami Heart Institute, 4701 N. Meridian Ave, Miami
Beach. Lunch will be provided. Tickets for the event are $25 for

REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS
Fernando Branco, M.D., assistant professor of clinical rehabilitation
medicine in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, will speak
on “Exercise and Aging” on Friday, April 30, from 8 to
9 a.m. at the Jackson Rehabilitation Center third-floor auditorium.
Dr. Branco will provide an introduction to exercise physiology and
discuss exercise testing, evaluation, physiological parameters, prescriptions
and indications of exercise in relation to aging. No RSVP is necessary.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY SEAT CHECK
The Injury Free Coalition for Kids at the University of Miami/ Jackson
Memorial Medical Center will be holding a child passenger safety
seat check event on April 30. Motor vehicle crashes kill more children
than any other cause. But while car and booster seats are known to
save children's lives, most are improperly used. Families may bring
their car to have the installation of their child safety seat or
booster seat checked by a certified child passenger safety technician
and will receive road safety education. The event will take place
from 2 to 5 p.m. at the parking lot in front of the Ryder Trauma
Center (on 9th Avenue and 18th Street). Please contact Julie Belkowitz,

FINDING PEACE WITH STRESS
The Employee Assistance Program is offering a relaxing seminar called “Finding
Peace with Stress.” Participants will learn to address the factors
that influence their own levels of stress, and to practice effective
stress management techniques. Free relaxation CDs will be given to
the first 30 participants. The seminar will be held on the Medical

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE LECTURE SERIES FEATURES MAYA ANGELOU
American poet/author Maya Angelou will speak at the UM Convocation
Center on Tuesday, April 27, at 7 p.m. as part of the Presidential
Debate Lecture Series. The event is free for faculty and staff, but
you must have a ticket to enter. Please bring your University ID
to the Department of Minority Student Affairs in the Rosenstiel Medical
Science Building, room 2010 (phone number: 305-243-5998), to pick
up your ticket. Graduating students do not need to pick up
a ticket—you will receive your ticket at the Graduate Reception.
UM/SYLVESTER LAUNCHES NEW, EXPANDED WEB SITE
UM/Sylvester recently launched a new, expanded Web site. The revamped
site provides information about South Florida's only university-based
cancer center and specific information about cancer care at www.sylvester.org,
as well as access to appointment scheduling and opportunities to
submit questions. The web site will undergo more updating as it adds
more links to names and faces, non-cancer programs, research and
clinical trials and others. Additional Spanish section translations
are also underway. If you would like to submit suggestions for an

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD TO BE PRESENTED
TO DR. MYRON D. GINSBERG
Myron D. Ginsberg, M.D., of the Department of Neurology, will be presented
with this year’s Faculty Senate Distinguished Faculty Scholar
award on Friday, April 30, at 3 p.m. in the Storer Auditorium, School
of Business Administration. At the award ceremony, Dr. Ginsberg will
also present "Preventing Brain Damage After Stroke - a Journey

OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER SEMINAR AND OPEN HOUSE
The Office of Technology Transfer is sponsoring a seminar and open

THE CENTER ON AGING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
Barbara Resnick, Ph.D., CRNP, FAAN, associate professor in the Department
of Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing,
will discuss "Innovative Strategies to Motivating Older Adults
to Engage in Health Behaviors" as part of The Center on Aging’s
Distinguished Lecture Series on April 29 at noon in the Hurricane
100 Room, Convocation Center, 1245 Walsh Avenue. Dr. Resnick is nationally
known for her work in motivating older adults to achieve their highest
functional level, maintain their health and overall quality of life.

IDX OPEN REFERRALS TRAINING
The Office of Business Information Management Systems announces IDX
open referral training sessions, designed to train employees who
enter appointments or referrals into the IDX system. Training is
mandatory for all employees who schedule appointments and/or enter
referrals. This training will allow the employee to understand, create,
and edit referrals, and link referrals to the appointment scheduling
section. There are multiple dates and sessions available. Please

NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR ON PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION
The Office of Extramural Research sponsors semi-annual regional seminars
on program funding and grants May 5 to 7 at the Wyndham Miami Beach
Resort. These seminars are intended to help demystify the application
and review process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and
highlight current areas of special interest or concern. The seminars
are appropriate for grant administrators, researchers new to NIH,
and graduate students. Computer labs will be offered in conjunction

ZUBROD MEMORIAL LECTURE, UM/SYLVESTER RESEARCH POSTER SESSION
Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., professor of medicine and cancer biology and
director of the Breast Cancer Research Program and SPORE at the Vanderbilt-Ingram
Comprehensive Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine,
will deliver this year’s Zubrod Memorial Lecture on June 3
at noon in the second floor of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Diagnostic
Treatment Center. Dr. Arteaga will discuss “From Sarcoma Growth
Factor to TGF-beta Targeted Therapies in Human Neoplasia.” The
event will also feature the announcement of UM/Sylvester’s

MEDICAL EDUCATION GRAND ROUNDS
Helen MacRae, M.D., the D.H. Gales Director of the Surgical Skills
Centre at the University of Toronto, will be the guest speaker at
Medical Education Grand Rounds on Friday, May 28, at noon in the
Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fifth floor. Lunch will be served.
The title of Dr. MacRae’s presentation is “Technical
Skills Labs: Flight Simulators of the Future?” Dr. MacRae will
explore the research in technical skills acquisition, help participants
understand how technical skills laboratories are being used to enhance
skills acquisition in undergraduate and post-graduate education,
and discuss how a skills lab curriculum can be implemented in a residency

13th ANNUAL FEAST AMONG THE GRAPES
Join Diabetes Research Institute supporters on June 12 at 8 p.m. at
the 13th Annual Feast Among the Grapes, South Florida's finest wine
and food tasting event , to be held at the Parrot Jungle on Watson
Island. Proceeds from this event will benefit the DRI. Tickets are
$70 before May 22 and $75 after that date. Tickets are $85 at the

PEDESTRIAN GATES CLOSED THIS WEEKEND
As part of the medical center safety initiative, Jackson will be closing
the pedestrian gates this weekend. The only place where access
will be completely blocked is the walkway between the Rosenstiel
Medical Sciences Building and Park Plaza West. In addition,
employees who work at or near Bascom Palmer or the Mental Health
Center and need to walk to Jackson or the Metrorail station should
use the pedestrian walkway across the street from Bascom Palmer,
running in front of the Jackson emergency room.
Streets are NOT affected by the gate closings; driving patterns will
be unchanged.
The gates will close at 10 p.m. Friday and reopen at 6 a.m.
Monday. If this trial goes well, the gates will be locked weekends
