HOLIDAY CONCERT
The Musical Ensemble for the Enrichment of Medicine will perform for patients
and staff tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. in the eighth-floor auditorium of
the Mailman Center. It is sponsored by the Cancer Patient Support Program
and all patients and staff are invited. The concert is free of charge but
please RSVP at the UM/Sylvester patient registration desk. Dessert and

HOLIDAY SERVICES AND CELEBRATIONS
Rabbi Solomon Schiff will lead a Hannukkah service this Friday from 10 to 11
a.m. in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301, with refreshments after the
service. Also this Friday, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 1301, Dr. Carlos Sandoval-Cros
will lead Christmas prayers and caroling. For more information about either

ALS HOLIDAY CARDS
The Department of Neurology is selling holiday cards to benefit the Kessenich
Family MDA ALS Center. This year’s cards feature artwork from Romero
Brito, Nydia Sanchez Franco, Sebastian Spreng, Monty Topche and Cenk Sengun,
as well as designs from employees. Proceeds from the cards help support the

DEAN’S PATIENT SAFETY COLLOQUIUM WORKSHOP
The UM/JMH Center for Patient Safety welcomes John Carroll, Ph.D., professor
of business at MIT. Much of Professor Carroll’s research has focused
on individual and group decision-making, the relationship between cognition
and behavior in organizational contexts, and the processes that link individual,
group, and organizational learning. Tomorrow he will discuss “Learning
from Experience in Organizations that Care about Safety,” from noon
to 1 p.m. in the JMH second-floor central auditorium. Lunch will be provided.

PALLIATIVE CARE SEMINAR
The Courtelis Center for Research and Treatment in Psychosocial Oncology at
UM/Sylvester presents “Self-Care II,” a discussion designed to
help physicians, nurses, social workers and psychiatrists learn to manage
the difficulties of palliative care. Carlos Sandoval-Cros, M.D., Victoria
Bustamante, Psy.D., Lourdes Grenier, L.C.S.W., and Fariba Ostovary, M.S.N.,
A.R.N.P., C.S., will lead the discussion today at noon in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301. Lunch will be served. It is not necessary to RSVP.
HIV-1 VACCINE LECTURE
Ke-Qin Xin, M.D., Ph.D., of Yokohama City University School of Medicine in
Yokohama, Japan, will present “Prime-Boost Vaccination with DNA Plasmid
and a Chimera Ad5/F35 Vector Induced Long-term Protective Immunity against
HIV” this Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Mailman Center eighth-floor auditorium.
Dr. Xin was a post-doctoral fellow for several years in the 1990s at the

SAFETY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety suggests the following tips to
keep your holidays safe: Artificial Christmas trees should have a “fire
resistant” label, and make sure natural Christmas trees are watered
daily. All decorative lights, as well as floodlights, extension cords and
other devices, should be U.L. rated and approved for use. Inspect all lights
for frayed or bare wires, never use electric lights on a metal tree, and
turn off all Christmas tree lights when you leave. Use only flame-resistant
decorations and keep lighted candles away from trees and decorations. Turn
off all portable electric heaters when you leave and remember, never drink
and drive. Have a safe and happy holiday!

TWO RESEARCHERS VISIT IN JANUARY
The Gail F. Beach Memorial 2003-04 Visiting Lectureship Series resumes Wednesday,
January 7, with Bror Alstermark, M.D., Ph.D., of Umea University,
Sweden. Dr. Alstermark will present "Control of Forelimb Movements
and Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury." On Wednesday, January 14,
Craig C. Garner, Ph.D., of Stanford University will present "Dynamic Assembly
of Nascent Synapses." Both lectures will be held in the Lois
Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor auditorium at noon. For more information

LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on
Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center
room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers'
Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received
grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator
since the early 1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants.
Attendance at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through
an application process. The cost to attend is $125 and payment by check, IDR,
or credit card must accompany your application. For more information, contact

SAVE THE DATE - FRESHMAN PINNING CEREMONY
Join the School of Medicine student body, Department of Medical Education and
the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Affairs in passing the torch
to the newest generation of future physicians at the fourth annual Freshman
Pinning Ceremony. This tradition was created by a group of students to establish
a link between classes at the School of Medicine. This year’s event
will be held Friday, January 16, at 2 p.m. in the Schoninger Research Quadrangle.

NEUROLOGICAL UPDATE 2004
The Division of Continuing Medical Education presents this annual update to
provide clinicians with the latest developments in the diagnosis and management

SPINAL CORD INJURY CONFERENCE
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in conjunction with the South Florida
Spinal Cord Injury Model System (SFSCIMS), The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis,
Jackson Memorial Medical Center and the Miami VA Medical Center will present
the Third Annual Spinal Cord Injury Conference at the Miami Project to Cure
Paralysis, seventh-floor auditorium, Lois Pope LIFE Center on Tuesday, January
20. Consumers, students and professional health care providers are invited
to the conference, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Topics will include
an update on progress training the spinal cord, translational research, new
findings related to exercise and SCI, treating complications of spinal cord
injury, recent research highlights, ongoing clinical trials and more. Registration
