FLU SHOTS FREE TO EMPLOYEES
Flu shots will be available free to all School of Medicine employees
starting next week. The shots will be administered in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301, at the following times: Tuesday, October 28,
from 7 to 11 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, October 29, from
2 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday, November 11, from 7 to 10 a.m. and from 11
a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Thursday, November 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. Please
bring your UM I.D. badge and if you have United Health Care insurance,
please bring your membership card or I.D. number, which is usually
your social security number.
BENEFITS OPEN ENROLLMENT BEGINS TODAY
The 2004 benefits open enrollment period starts today and runs through
Friday, November 7. Open enrollment must be completed online through “Your
Benefits Link” at benefits.miami.edu. You will need a Personal
Identification Number (PIN) to complete enrollment. If you do not
have a PIN or you have forgotten it, log on to the “Your Benefits
Link” by using your most recent net pay amount from your paycheck.
The open enrollment benefits fair will be held at the Jackson Memorial
Hospital Cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Thursday, and from
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Friday.
UM TO HOST LUNG SCREENING CONFERENCE
The 9th International Conference on Screening for Lung Cancer will
be held in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor auditorium this
Friday and Saturday. Claudia I. Henschke, M.D., of Cornell University
will join UM investigators to announce dramatic findings from the
multi-center Early Lung Cancer Action Program. Researchers will also
discuss overdiagnosis of lung cancer, staging tumors and more. For

END-OF-LIFE CARE TRAINING OFFERED AT UM/SYLVESTER
Carlos Sandoval-Cros, M.D., director of the Courtelis Center for Research
and Treatment in Psychosocial Oncology at UM/Sylvester, will lecture
on “Cultural Issues in End-of-Life Care” tomorrow at
noon in the UM/Sylvester conference room, room 1301. The lecture
is for health care professionals only and lunch will be provided.
This is the latest in an educational series for health care professionals
on end-of-life care offered throughout the year at UM/Sylvester.
MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR PHARMACOLOGY SEMINAR
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology presents Rakesh
Singal, M.D., of Hematology/Oncology at UM/Sylvester, speaking on “DNA
Methylation and Globin Gene Regulation” this Thursday at noon
in the Pharmacology conference room, RMSB 6018.
PATIENT PRIVACY RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for October will feature Michael
A. Novo, Esq., speaking on HIPAA. The seminar will be held October
28 in the RMSB fifth-floor auditorium, from noon to 1 p.m. Advance

BREAST CANCER EDUCATIONAL EVENT
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UM/Sylvester at Deerfield
Beach is hosting “Neurological Implications of Breast Cancer,” presented
by Deborah Heros, M.D., director of the Division of Neurological
Oncology, today from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch will be served. UM/Sylvester

BASKETBALL TICKETS HALF OFF
Full-time UM employees can purchase Hurricane basketball season tickets
for as little as $88 per seat for men’s hoops and $38 per seat
for women’s hoops. See the ‘Canes play in their final
year in the Big East, then be first in line for season tickets for
the inaugural ACC season next year.
And the men’s and women’s basketball teams invite you
to Hurricane Hoops Day from 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Convocation

REGISTER NOW FOR REQUIRED CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
FOR EMPLOYEES INVOLVED IN SPONSORED RESEARCH
The University has launched a required educational certification program
for all non-faculty departmental personnel involved in all aspects
of sponsored research activities. The program is currently open for
non-faculty departmental personnel who originate, review, reconcile
or approve any phase of a sponsored grant or contract, including proposals,
awards, and transactions. The program is divided into five sessions
spread over two-and-a-half days. Attendance is required for all sessions
and a test will be given during the fifth session. The schedule of
classes and on-line registration for non-faculty departmental personnel
is processed through the Professional Development and Training Office
website. Please scroll down to
the Sponsored Programs Educational Sessions one through five, determine
which sessions suit your schedule, then follow the directions to register
online. Make sure to register for the entire program (Sessions one
through five in consecutive order). For more information, please e-mail

yet. It will consist of a two-and-a-half hour educational program on
different aspects of sponsored programs. The faculty/investigator program
will begin in the late fall and notice will be issued in advance.

The star of “Who’s the Boss?” and “Taxi” will
perform a song and dance show on Thursday, November 13, at the historic
Lincoln Theatre in an important event to benefit cancer research at
UM/Sylvester. Master of ceremonies will be actress Mindy Sterling,
best known for her characterization of “Frau Farbissina” in
the Austin Powers movies. The performance begins at 8 p.m. with a pre-show

INVESTMENT SEMINARS
TIAA-CREF will conduct two seminars on October 30 in the eighth-floor
auditorium of the Mailman Center. "A Woman's Money, A Woman's
Future" will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will discuss proven
tactics to prepare for a more secure financial future. You'll receive
guidance on investment basics, portfolio building, selecting the
best products to meet your financial goals, retirement planning and

TIME MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
The University of Miami Employee Assistance Program offered a popular
seminar on time management in August on the medical campus. Because
of tremendous interest, that seminar will be repeated on the Coral
Gables campus on October 29 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 139 of
the Max Orovitz Building. The training will emphasize setting priorities
and goals, decision-making techniques, strategies for identifying

SCARING UP HALLOWEEN FUN
The staff of the Physician Referral Office will be resurrecting ghosts
and goblins for their annual United Way fundraiser. For just $1 on
October 31, employees and visitors alike can walk through the Land
of the Pirates Haunted Office in the Park Plaza West Breezeway. They
will also have candy for sale with all proceeds going to United Way.
REHABILITATION MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine presents “Grand Rounds
- Heterotopic Ossification,” presented by Kresimir Banovac, M.D.,
professor of rehabilitation medicine, on October 31 from 12:30 to 1:30
p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium. It is

ULTRASOUND AWARENESS MONTH EVENTS
October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month. Luis Izquierdo, M.D.,
director of diagnostic ultrasound, and Barbara Carbajales, supervisor
of the Division of Ultrasound at the Kendall Medical Center, are
offering a tour of the ultrasound facility for faculty, staff, students,
and the general public on Monday, October 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

GRIEF WORKSHOP
A day-long seminar called “Monday Mournings” will address
grief in the workplace on Tuesday, October 28. The discussion will
be led by Edie Stark, R.N., a well-known certified grief counselor,
and CME hours are available for nurses, respiratory therapists, and
social workers. Participants will meet in the Jackson Medical Towers,
seventh-floor east, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a $50 registration
