FACULTY PROMOTION AND TENURE WORKSHOP
All faculty and others interested in the appointment, promotion and tenure
process are invited to join Dean John Clarkson, faculty senate chair Mary
Coombs, and leaders of the School of Medicine Appointment, Promotion and
Tenure Committee for “Policies and Procedures for Promotion and Tenure.” This
will be an opportunity to learn about the process and to interact with individuals
involved in promotion decisions. The workshop will be held in the second-floor
Retter Auditorium of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute on Thursday, March 25,

IDENTITY THEFT SEMINAR
Due to especially high interest, the Employee Assistance Program has added
another session of the seminar, “Identity Theft: Prevention and Recovery.” The
seminar will provide useful information and resources on what is the fastest-growing
white collar crime. Learn how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim and
what to do in the event of an identity theft. The seminar will be Monday,
March 15, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Professional Development and Training

COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS LECTURE SERIES
In recognition of March being Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, UM/Sylvester
is offering three lectures on subsequent Tuesdays at noon in the UM/Sylvester
conference room 1301. March 9, Laurence R. Sands, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.C.R.S.,
will present “Surgical Treatment of Colorectal Cancer,” March
16, Michael Hellinger, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.C.R.S., will present “Screening
and Detection of Colorectal Cancer,” and March 23, Mayra Lima, R.N.,
M.S.N., F.N.P.C. will present “Medical Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.” Lunch

HIV WINTER SYMPOSIUM
The Division of Infectious Diseases invites clinicians and investigators with
an interest in HIV disease to “UM HIV Winter Symposium: A Bridge to
the Future,” from 1 p.m., Friday March 5, to 11 a.m., Saturday March
6, at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium. The symposium
will focus on the immunopathogenesis of HIV disease ad will include leading

NEUROGENESIS LECTURE
The Gail F. Beach Memorial 2003-04 Visiting Lectureship Series continues
tomorrow with Freda D. Miller, Ph.D., of The Hospital for Sick Children
Research Institute, University of Toronto. Dr. Miller will present "From
Stem Cells to Neurons: Molecular Mechanisms Regulating Neurogenesis." The
lecture will be held in the Lois Pope LIFE Center seventh-floor auditorium

UM/SYLVESTER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
A. Karolina Palucka, M.D., Ph.D., investigator, Baylor Institute for Immunology
Research in Dallas, will present “Dendritic Cells: Biology and Therapeutic
Use,” in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301 this Friday from noon
to 1 p.m. This didactic lecture series provides a forum for outstanding clinical
and translational researchers to interact with UM/Sylvester faculty. The
focus of the series is to bring basic science and clinical researchers together
to discuss recent advances in the understanding and treatment of human cancer. Lunch

ROVING SYMPOSIUM
The South Florida SCI Model System will sponsor a special roving symposium
presenting international speaker and author Gary Karp’s Life on Wheels, “A
Compelling and Intimate Look at the Modern Disability Experience.” Karp
is the author of Life on Wheels: For the Active Wheelchair User, and Choosing
a Wheelchair: A Guide for Optimal Independence. He is co-editor of a new
book of essays by people with spinal cord injuries titled From There to Here:
Stories of Adjustment to Spinal Cord Injury. He writes for New Mobility magazine
and is a member of the board of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association.
This symposium is Monday, March 8, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Lois Pope LIFE

IDX OPEN REFERRALS TRAINING
The Office of Business Information Management Systems announces IDX open referral
training sessions, designed to train employees who enter appointments or
referrals into the IDX system. Training is mandatory for all employees who
schedule appointments and/or enter referrals. This training will allow the
employee to understand, create, and edit referrals, and link referrals to
the appointment scheduling section. There are multiple dates and sessions

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” this
Thursday and Friday at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center room 259. Stephen
W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops,
L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received grant support from
the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator since the early
1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants. Attendance
at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through an application
process. The cost to attend is $125 and payment by check, IDR, or credit card

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THE WORKPLACE SEMINAR
The Employee Assistance Program will present “Domestic Violence and the
Workplace,” this Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Dominion Parking

on the workplace, how to help someone in an abusive relationship, and what

SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAM

DIALOGUES IN RESEARCH ETHICS
When is Written Consent Necessary? The Case of Education Research will be presented
Friday, March 5 at Noon, Room 3023, Mailman Center for Child Development.
Jack M. Fletcher, Ph.D., University of Texas Health Science Center will be
the presenter. Dr. Fletcher is professor of pediatrics at The University
of Texas Health Science Center and Associate Director of the Center for Academic
and Reading Skills. He is a member of the National Research Council Committee
on Research in Education.
BLOOD DRIVE MEDICAL CAMPUS
The next blood drive on the Medical Campus will be Thursday, March 11 in the
Rosenstiel Building, 2nd floor student lounge and in the Sylvester Courtyard
(mobile unit). On Friday, March 12, the blood drive will be only at the Rosenstiel
location. The time for both days is 9 am to 4 pm.
LOIS POPE LIFE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED
Three of the nation’s top physician-scientists, recipients of this year’s
Lois Pope LIFE International Research Award will hold a scientific presentation
on March 11 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Apex Auditorium, seventh floor, Lois Pope
LIFE Center. Margaret Ann Fischl, M.D., Mary J. O’Sullivan, M.D., and
Gwendolyn B. Scott, M.D., will discuss their research.
