SELF-DEFENSE COURSE
A woman’s risk of being victimized by violence increases during the holidays. Preparation is the key to your safety. Join us for SAFE – the Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange – on Monday, December 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. The location has not been selected yet. The SAFE program will teach simple techniques to help participants avoid dangerous situations and reduce their risk. Registration is $5 and the deadline to register is Friday, December 5. UPDATE YOUR INFO ON EASY
A reminder to all employees – please make sure your personal information is correct on the EASY system. EASY is the source for information for University mailings, contact information and more, and it’s important that all details on students, staff and faculty be kept up-to-date. You’ll need your employee ID and a personal identification number to log in, but there is a link for first-time users to get a PIN. Visit easy.miami.edu.

BASIC ACUPUNCTURE COURSE FOR MEDICAL DOCTORS OFFERED
Physicians can earn more than 100 CME hours in this course designed to help physicians integrate acupuncture into their practice. Participants will learn general diagnostic and treatment principles of basic body acupuncture, simple auricular acupuncture, how to describe the diagnosis, treatment, evaluation, and follow-up of various diseases treated by acupuncture, Oriental touch techniques and how to use acupuncture with other treatment modalities. The program is recognized by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture Exam and participants can qualify for the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. The course meets in Dominion Tower on 16 Saturdays (not consecutive) beginning January 10 and ending on May 22, 2004. Tuition remission is available for employees. WORLD AIDS DAY HEALTH FAIR
The University of Miami Comprehensive AIDS Program and JMH South Florida AIDS Network are hosting the annual World AIDS Day Health Fair on Friday, December 5, in the plaza outside the Alamo. CENTER ON AGING DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES
The Center on Aging invites all faculty and staff to the premier lecture of an exciting new series. Fernando M. Torres Gil, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Public Policy and Social Research at UCLA, will discuss issues in aging at the Lowe Art Museum, December 3, at 4 p.m. Dr. Torres Gil was the first-ever assistant secretary for aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Shalala. MR CENTER NOT AFFECTED BY INSURANCE INCREASES
Recent increases in United Healthcare employee copays will not affect the University of Miami MR Center. The MR Center is a free-standing facility without any copays for employees. Typically, the center offers same day access to UM employees and the Department of Radiology offers subspecialty interpretation at its MR Center located at 1115 NW 14 Street.

DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE MOVING
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is now located in the Rehab Basement at Jackson Memorial Hospital, locator code D461. The new main phone number is 305-585-1320. The appointment number is 305-243-6605.

UM/SYLVESTER CANCER DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH GRANTS
UM/Sylvester will be accepting applications for Developmental Research Grants in support of pilot projects in cancer research. Awards will be made for up to one year for a maximum of $30,000 each. Applications are available from the UM/Sylvester Office of Research Administration in Fox 403, or via e-mail from dmills@med.miami.edu. The deadline to apply is December 15.

HURRICANE HOOPS ACTION
Full-time UM employees can purchase Hurricane basketball season tickets for as little as $88 per seat for men’s hoops and $38 per seat for women’s hoops. See the ‘Canes play in their final year in the Big East, then be first in line for season tickets for the inaugural ACC season next year. Also, fans can get single game tickets for all 10 men’s basketball non-conference home games, including tip-offs against Florida State University, Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University. They’re available now starting at $15 a seat.

Don't miss opening night for the women's basketball team next Tuesday, December 2, at 5 p.m. against cross-town rival Florida International University at the Convocation Center. The men’s season continues that night when they host Stetson University at 8 p.m.

And season tickets for the women's basketball team are only $75 for a reserved seat and $150 for a courtside seat. Single game tickets for all women's basketball home games, including clashes with Florida International University, the University of Florida, and Notre Dame, are now available at the Hurricane Ticket Office for $5 for adults and $3 for children. ETHICS SEMINAR ON POLLUTION AND HEALTH DISPARITIES
Richard D. Gragg, III, Ph.D., interim director and associate professor for the Environmental Sciences Institute at Florida A&M University, will speak on “Pollution and Health Disparities” Friday, December 5, at noon in the Pharmacology Conference Room, RMSB 6018. Lunch will be provided and it is not necessary to RSVP. “Dialogues in Research Ethics," sponsored by UM's Ethics Programs, is a monthly series designed to stimulate discussion and debate. LEARN TO WRITE WINNING GRANTS
The Office of Research is sponsoring “Write Winning Grants” on Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, 2004, at the JMH Diagnostic Treatment Center room 259. Stephen W. Russell, founding and managing member of Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, L.L.C., will conduct the sessions. Russell has received grant support from the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator since the early 1970s including individual, group, center, and training grants. Attendance at the seminar is limited and participants will be selected through an application process. DEERFIELD BEACH EDUCATIONAL EVENTS
Joseph A. Lucci, III, M.D., will present “Hormones and Cancer” at UM/Sylvester at Deerfield Beach, from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 2. Victoria Bustamante, Psy.D., of the Courtelis Center will present “Handling Holiday Stress” from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9. NEUROLOGICAL UPDATE 2004

SAVE THE DATE - FRESHMAN PINNING CEREMONY
Join the School of Medicine student body, Department of Medical Education and the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Affairs in passing the torch to the newest generation of future physicians at the fourth annual Freshman Pinning Ceremony. This tradition at the medical school was created by a group of students to establish a link between classes at the School of Medicine. This year’s event will be held Friday, January 16, at 2 p.m. in the Schoninger Research Quadrangle. All students, faculty, and alumni are invited to participate.
