PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION
SET FOR 8:30 A.M., NOVEMBER 2
The details of President
Shalala's inauguration are still being finalized, but here's a preview.
The inauguration ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November
2, with a musical overture. A tent will be erected on the Coral Gables
campus green across from the Ritcher Library for the formal investiture
ceremony that will begin with a traditional academic procession composed
of the Faculty Senate, faculty members, alumni and student representatives,
and representatives from other colleges and universities. Following
this group will be a presidential procession that will include members
of the UM Board of Trustees and official representatives from each of
the University's schools and colleges. A musical program will be provided
by the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of
Thomas Sleeper. For more information check out the inauguration web
page at www.miami.edu/inaugural.
UM SCIENTIFIC AWARDS COMMITTEE
CAN PROVIDE FUNDING DURING EMERGENCY RESEARCH SITUATIONS
Keep in mind that
the Scientific Awards Committee (SAC) is a viable resource for emergency
research funds at the School of Medicine. In the near future, the SAC
hopes to expand its budget to allow generous awards for several research
initiatives, including providing funds to researchers on a hiatus in
grant funding, repairing or replacing broken equipment, acquiring new
equipment, and funding pilot projects of investigators who need to redirect
their research. For an application for funds from the SAC, contact Tessa
Boudreax in the Office or Research at 305-243-6415 or Gerhard Dahl,
M.D., SAC chair, at 305-243-5776.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE WEB
SITE OFFERS RESOURCES FOR DEALING WITH RECENT NATIONAL TRAGEDY
In the wake of a
tragedy, such as the September 11 terrorist attacks on America, many
people need extended emotional support and counseling. In addition,
parents may seek guidance in discussing the recent events with their
children. Recognizing these needs, the Employee Assistance Program has
established a web site to address the issues of "Coping with Disaster."
Some of the site's content includes normal reactions you can expect
to have following a crisis, as well as links to helpful resources on
children's issues, as they relate to terrorism, violence, grief, and
loss. Visit http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,2441-1;10066-5,00.html
to learn more. Your EAP also is available to talk to you or your family
about emotional issues you are facing. Call 305-243-7676 to schedule
an appointment.
