RESEARCH LEADERSHIP CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS
TO NATIONAL HEALTH POLICY FELLOWSHIPS

The Executive Office of Research Leadership invites applicants to compete for the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowships for 2002. The program seeks individuals who will contribute to U.S. health policy development, bring a fresh and informed perspective, and will translate lessons learned at the national level to improve health care and policy at the state and local levels as well. Eight mid-career health professionals will be selected as fellows for a three-year program, which includes 12 ñ16 months in Washington, D.C., serving the executive or legislative branch of the federal government, followed by a return to their institution or another appropriate position to further develop health policy leadership skills. Grant funds will cover salary support up to $80,000 per year, plus fringe benefits. Health professionals from many different disciplines will be considered. DR. JOHN RYAN SELECTED FOR NATIONAL
FELLOWSHIP ON PRIMARY HEALTH CARE POLICY

John G. Ryan, Dr.P.H., director of the Office of Primary Care/Health Services Research and Development in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, was selected to participate in the Secretary's Policy Fellowship in Primary Health Care. The program is a six month intensive curriculum, which also includes four weeks of on-site training, primarily in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ryan will gain knowledge in primary health care programs and policy issues as they relate to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as their applicability on the local, state, and institutional levels. He was nominated by the North American Primary Research Group, of which he is a member, and follows the footsteps of Robert Schwartz, M.D., chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, who is a graduate of the fellowship program.

ETHICS DIALOGUES CONTINUE WITH FOCUS ON
GOVERNMENT'S ROLE IN RESEARCH CONDUCT

The UM Ethics Programs present the next installment of the continuing series "Dialogues in Research Ethics" this Friday, January 18. Alicia Dustira, Ph.D., of the U.S. Office of Research Integrity, will present "Responsible Conduct of Research: The Government's Role ñ and Reasons," at noon in the Pharmacology Conference Room, Rosenstiel 6018. At the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Dustira develops and manages a variety of educational programs designed to prevent research misconduct and foster responsible research conduct. Her lecture will address the forces that drive increased attention to scientific integrity and research conduct, including intellectual excitement, dramatic examples of misconduct, and federal rules. INTERDEPARTMENTAL ACADEMIC DAY TO
FOCUS ON COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

Join the Behavioral Science Program of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, along with several other disciplines, for an Interdepartmental Academic Day to address complementary medicine. A primary aim of this conference is to help physicians and all others who are interested to learn about some of the complementary adjuvants to "traditional" medical approaches. Lectures on herbal remedies, acupuncture, and yoga will be given, and attendees also may participate in a workshop featuring demonstrations of these services. The event will be held January 30, 8 a.m. to noon, in Bascom Palmer's Retter Auditorium, and all are invited. FACULTY AND STAFF ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND
ON-CAMPUS CELEBRATION TO HONOR FOOTBALL CHAMPS

The University of Miami football team will be honored as the 2001 National Champions at a campus celebration on Friday, January 25, at 7 p.m., on the University Green on the Coral Gables campus. The entire university communityófaculty, staff, alumni, students, and fansóis invited to attend. The football team and coaching staff will take part in the ceremony, emceed by ESPN show host and UM alumnus Roy Firestone and "Voice of the Hurricanes" Mark Vandermeer. You may also be aware that there also will be a tickertape parade in downtown Miami earlier in the day, which is intended to give the greater Miami community an opportunity to show their support. Due to medical school obligations, faculty and staff who wish to attend the parade will need to take the time off as personal or vacation leave, with the concurrence of their immediate supervisor.

HURRICANES ATHLETICS OFFERS "PICK N ROLL"
PACKAGE FOR 2001-2002 MEN'S BASKETBALL TICKETS

Watch the Hurricanes make a run for the NCAA basketball tournament this year with a Big East Pick n Roll mini-plan package for the 2001-2002 season. The package is $80 and includes tickets to any five Big East Conference games the Canes play at home. Seats will be located in the lower-bowl sidecourt sections of the Miami Arena. You can purchase your Pick n Roll package at the UM Ticket Office, located at the Hecht Athletic Center on the Gables campus. MANDATORY COURSE FOR BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
AND TUBERCULOSIS TRAINING AVAILABLE THIS MONTH

The "OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Tuberculosis Training" course is mandatory for all who have the potential for exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The course will be held January 14, 10 a.m. to noon, in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. You will learn about bloodborne pathogens, biomedical waste disposal, latex allergy, and tuberculosis control measures and regulations. You also will learn how to protect yourself from infection. A program of weekly small-group seminars on topics that pertain to the protection of human subjects in research continues January 15, with "Controversial Topics in Human Subject Protection," presented by Jay Sosenko, M.D., assistant provost for research standards, noon to 1 p.m., at the Mailman Center, Room 3023. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS INFORMATIVE
COURSE ON UNIVERSITY'S ACCOUNTING SYSTEM

Registrations are now being accepted for the 11th annual Masters of Pediatrics Conference, sponsored by the Departments of Pediatrics and Dermatology. The symposium will explore topics in general pediatrics, pediatric dermatology, and pediatric pulmonology and allergy. Many internationally renowned speakers and School of Medicine faculty will present lectures, and this year's keynote address, entitled "Children's Health Care 2002 and Beyond," will be delivered by UM President Donna E. Shalala. The conference will be held January 16 - 21, at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. A number of educational tracks are available to all UM faculty, staff, and students. AND COMPLIANCE REGULATIONS IN THE LAB

Lean basic biological and chemical laboratory safety principles; emergency procedures; and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations at "Laboratory Safety/Hazardous Waste," presented by the Office of Professional Development and Training. CARE MANAGEMENT THROUGH CONTINUING STUDIES

The Post-Graduate Certificate Program in Healthcare Management, offered by the School of Continuing Studies, is now accepting registrations for courses scheduled to begin on January 21. The program consists of six courses of 15 hours each, at a cost of $375 per course. It is designed for those who work in a health care setting and want to gain advanced training in administration of healthcare services. SYSTEM IS FOCUS OF TRAINING COURSE

Gain an overview of the University's web-based departmental accounting system at "DMAS Training," presented by the Office of Professional Development and Training. This program is geared toward employees with a working knowledge of the University's Financial Records System. In this course, you will learn how to view ten-year account summary information, download account information to an Excel spreadsheet, view purchase orders, and more. "Fundamentals of Supervision" is a three-session program, presented by the Office of Professional Development and Training, that will teach you important policies and procedures, address personal liability issues, and provide you with a valuable reference manual. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the three classes. TOWN MEETING ON CANCER TO OFFER FORUM
FOR CASE DISCUSSION AND COLLABORATION

The Departments of Health Information, Quality Assurance, and Public Relations at Jackson Memorial Hospital are sponsoring a "Town Meeting on Cancer," February 8, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 252. The event is part of the JMH Public Cancer Education Plan, and the focus will be on breast cancer, commemorating the tenth anniversary of the JMH Breast Health Center. AT THE WALK FOR HOPE AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Join the fun for a good cause at the City of Hope's Walk for Hope Against Breast Cancer 5K walk/run. The event also features a "Fun Run" for kids and a Kid Zone with face-painting, clowns, and more. Awards, refreshments, a health expo and massages also will be available. The run will take place February 10, 8 a.m., at the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise.
