TO NATIONAL HEALTH POLICY FELLOWSHIPS
The Executive Office of Research Leadership invites applicants to compete
for the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowships for 2002. The program
seeks individuals who will contribute to U.S. health policy development, bring
a fresh and informed perspective, and will translate lessons learned at the
national level to improve health care and policy at the state and local levels
as well. Eight mid-career health professionals will be selected as fellows
for a three-year program, which includes 12 ñ16 months in Washington,
D.C., serving the executive or legislative branch of the federal government,
followed by a return to their institution or another appropriate position
to further develop health policy leadership skills. Grant funds will cover
salary support up to $80,000 per year, plus fringe benefits. Health professionals
from many different disciplines will be considered. For further details, contact

DR. JOHN RYAN SELECTED
FOR NATIONAL
FELLOWSHIP ON PRIMARY HEALTH CARE POLICY
John G. Ryan, Dr.P.H., director of the Office of Primary Care/Health Services
Research and Development in the Department of Family Medicine and Community
Health, was selected to participate in the Secretary's Policy Fellowship in
Primary Health Care. The program is a six month intensive curriculum, which
also includes four weeks of on-site training, primarily in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Ryan will gain knowledge in primary health care programs and policy issues
as they relate to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well
as their applicability on the local, state, and institutional levels. He was
nominated by the North American Primary Research Group, of which he is a member,
and follows the footsteps of Robert Schwartz, M.D., chairman of the Department
of Family Medicine and Community Health, who is a graduate of the fellowship
program.
ETHICS DIALOGUES CONTINUE
WITH FOCUS ON
GOVERNMENT'S ROLE IN RESEARCH CONDUCT
The UM Ethics Programs present the next installment of the continuing series
"Dialogues in Research Ethics" this Friday, January 18. Alicia Dustira,
Ph.D., of the U.S. Office of Research Integrity, will present "Responsible
Conduct of Research: The Government's Role ñ and Reasons," at
noon in the Pharmacology Conference Room, Rosenstiel 6018. At the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services, Dr. Dustira develops and manages a variety of
educational programs designed to prevent research misconduct and foster responsible
research conduct. Her lecture will address the forces that drive increased
attention to scientific integrity and research conduct, including intellectual
excitement, dramatic examples of misconduct, and federal rules. Lunch will

INTERDEPARTMENTAL ACADEMIC
DAY TO
FOCUS ON COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE
Join the Behavioral Science Program of the Department of Family Medicine and
Community Health, along with several other disciplines, for an Interdepartmental
Academic Day to address complementary medicine. A primary aim of this conference
is to help physicians and all others who are interested to learn about some
of the complementary adjuvants to "traditional" medical approaches.
Lectures on herbal remedies, acupuncture, and yoga will be given, and attendees
also may participate in a workshop featuring demonstrations of these services.
The event will be held January 30, 8 a.m. to noon, in Bascom Palmer's Retter

ON-CAMPUS CELEBRATION TO HONOR FOOTBALL CHAMPS
The University of Miami football team will be honored as the 2001 National
Champions at a campus celebration on Friday, January 25, at 7 p.m., on the
University Green on the Coral Gables campus. The entire university communityófaculty,
staff, alumni, students, and fansóis invited to attend. The football
team and coaching staff will take part in the ceremony, emceed by ESPN show
host and UM alumnus Roy Firestone and "Voice of the Hurricanes"
Mark Vandermeer. You may also be aware that there also will be a tickertape
parade in downtown Miami earlier in the day, which is intended to give the
greater Miami community an opportunity to show their support. Due to medical
school obligations, faculty and staff who wish to attend the parade will need
to take the time off as personal or vacation leave, with the concurrence of
their immediate supervisor.

MANDATORY COURSE FOR
BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
AND TUBERCULOSIS TRAINING AVAILABLE THIS MONTH
The "OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Tuberculosis Training" course
is mandatory for all who have the potential for exposure to blood or other
potentially infectious materials. The course will be held January 14, 10 a.m.
to noon, in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. You will learn about bloodborne
pathogens, biomedical waste disposal, latex allergy, and tuberculosis control
measures and regulations. You also will learn how to protect yourself from
