PROJECT PROVIDES CARE TO CAREGIVERS

Mark Rubert, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and faculty member in the Center on Adult Development and Aging, and Sandra Walsh, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Nursing, recently received funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research for a project called Tele-Care. Tele-Care will provide caregivers with counseling, information, and support from UM nurses and faculty through regular telephone calls. If you are at least 50 years of age, caring for a seriously ill person, and are interested in receiving assistance from a registered nurse over the phone, call 305-355-9399 and leave a message. A Tele-Care team member will return your call immediately.

GENETIC DEFECT THAT CAUSES SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IS DUPLICATED IN LAB

Researchers at the School of Medicine have duplicated the genetic mutation that leads to sudden cardiac death. James Potter, Ph.D., chairman in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology, is the principal investigator of the study, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study will lead researchers to identify the mechanism of this disease as well as develop ways to intervene. Dr. Potter reported on the latest progress in sudden cardiac death research at the 44th annual meeting of the Biophysical Society on February 12 -16 in New Orleans.

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR HEALTH CARE HEROES AWARD NOMINATIONS

MEDICAL SCHOOL FELLOW RECEIVES 2000 YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

Nizar Bahlis, M.D., a fellow in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, received a 2000 American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award for his research efforts. The $35,000 award allows Dr. Bahlis to continue his lab research for a year. He has been working on arsenic therapy in myeloma, which was supported by a $8,000 seed grant from the Viral Oncology Program, chaired by William Harrington, Jr., M.D., associate professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology.

'CANES FALL FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The University of Miami Hurricanes will play McNeese State in the Orange Bowl on August 31 to kickoff the 2000 football season. In the next home game, scheduled for October 7, the 'Canes will face Florida State, traditionally the biggest game of the year. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERS SEMINAR ON FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

The Family Medical Leave Act was created to help caregivers meet the needs of those they are tending for, as well as to assist with meeting work obligations. To provide employees with detailed information on the act, the Office of Professional Development presents "A Caregiver's Stress Reliever: The Family Medical Leave Act," a course which explains your rights under this act. VASCULAR BIOLOGY INSTITUTE PRESENTS DIABETES RESEARCH SEMINARS

Two upcoming events sponsored by the Vascular Biology Institute will offer information and a discussion on diabetes research. Derek LeRoith, M.D., Ph.D., of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, will present "The Role of IGF's in Health and Disease" on March 7, from 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., at the RMSB 5th floor auditorium. TECHNOLOGY DAY PRESENTS SERVICE AND COMPUTER USER DEMONSTRATIONS

Faculty and staff are invited to Technology Day on March 9 at the Whitten University Center on the Coral Gables campus. Organized as an information fair, different groups from Information Technology will be on hand to demonstrate the various services they provide to employees. ANNUAL MAGEC SEMINAR BRINGS YOU TRENDS AND ADVANCES IN GERIATRIC CARE

The Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) and the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) present "Advances in Geriatrics XII: Geriatric Rehabilitation - A Team Approach," on March 9 - 10 at the Sheraton Ft. Lauderdale Airport Hotel. This annual program examines current and future trends in geriatric health care. The goal is to provide information about the physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects of geriatric rehabilitation. Continuing education credits will be provided for many disciplines. DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR HUMAN SUBJECTS CERTIFICATION SEMINAR

The second to last human subjects certification seminar is scheduled for March 13, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., at the Diagnostic Treatment Center, Room 259, Jackson Memorial Hospital. Sign-in will begin at 3:30 p.m. All investigators must attend one of the certification seminars. Those who fail to attend will not be certified to continue performing current studies or initiate new studies that require approval by the Institutional Review Boards at UM or the VA.
