FINAL INSTALLMENT OF UMMG PATIENT SERVICE
STANDARDS REVIEWS RULES FOR TRANSFERRING CALLS

The University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG) continuing series on Professional Practice and Patient Access Standards (PPPAS) concludes this week with final guidelines for telephone procedures, focusing on transferring calls. When transferring calls during normal business hours, patients will be connected to a live person. Calls should not be transferred to a voicemail box without the patient's permission. If the call cannot be transferred, the patient should be given appropriate phone numbers and the name of a contact person (if known) for follow-up at a later time. If your department would like to schedule a review of these or any other Professional Practice and Patient Access Standards with Minor Anderson, managing director of the UMMG, and Leo Twiggs, M.D., PPPAS committee chairman, call 305-243-7100. For questions on physician compliance with these standards, contact Dr. Alan Livingstone at 305-585-1284. For staff compliance issues, contact Anderson at 305-243-7100.
