STANDARDS REVIEWS RULES FOR TRANSFERRING CALLS
The University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG) continuing series on Professional
Practice and Patient Access Standards (PPPAS) concludes this week with final
guidelines for telephone procedures, focusing on transferring calls. When
transferring calls during normal business hours, patients will be connected
to a live person. Calls should not be transferred to a voicemail box without
the patient's permission. If the call cannot be transferred, the patient should
be given appropriate phone numbers and the name of a contact person (if known)
for follow-up at a later time. If your department would like to schedule a
review of these or any other Professional Practice and Patient Access Standards
with Minor Anderson, managing director of the UMMG, and Leo Twiggs, M.D.,

AVON CALLING: UM/SYLVESTER
AND
JACKSON JOIN IN BREAST CANCER CRUSADE
The Avon Foundation granted $500,000 this week to UM/Sylvester and The Taylor
Breast Health Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in support of projects geared
toward research, diagnosis, treatment, and education of women in underserved
communities. Judith Hurley, Ph.D., director of oncology clinics at Jackson
and a member of the breast cancer site-based disease group at UM/Sylvester,
was named as the primary beneficiary to head the project. The gift stems from
the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, an initiative with the mission of funding
access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer.

RAPE
TREATMENT CENTER FOR DEDICATED SERVICE
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas declared April 17 as Sexual
Assault Awareness Day across the state, honoring the Rape Treatment Center
at UM/Jackson for its work in treating, educating, and preventing sexual assault
throughout South Florida. Since its establishment in 1974, the center has
treated more than 45,000 victims of sexual assault. Karen Simmons, M.D., director
of the Rape Treatment Center, received a proclamation from Commissioner Seijas
on April 17, in recognition of the center's commitment.
SAVE THE DATE FOR INTERDEPARTMENTAL
DISCUSSION OF SPIRITUALITY IN MEDICINE
Join the Behavioral Science Program of the Department of Family Medicine and
Community Health, along with several other disciplines, for an Interdepartmental
Academic Day to address "Spirituality and Medicine." A primary aim
of this conference is to help physicians and other health care workers discuss
and learn about the beneficial uses of spirituality in medical settings, such
as pediatrics, ob/gyn, and addiction psychiatry. Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor
and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and
Carl Eisdorfer, Ph.D., M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences, will be among the members of a faculty panel that
will address aspects of spirituality covered at the conference. The event
will be held May 29, 8 a.m. to noon, in Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center,
Room 270. No RSVP or registration fee is required, but please arrive early.
