ANNIVERSARY ALBUM
**********************

Learn fun facts about the School of Medicine’s history every two weeks, as e-Update presents the latest in a special series commemorating our 50th anniversary.

A legacy of excellence in cancer care and research began at the School of Medicine in 1973, when the State of Florida established a Comprehensive Cancer Center at UM. Re-named the Papanicolaou Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1984 to honor a pioneer in the field, the institute ultimately became the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1986 when the Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation donated $32.5 million to strengthen the School of Medicine’s fight against cancer. The center’s facility opened in 1992 and today serves as the largest outpatient cancer treatment facility in the southeastern U.S., meeting the physical and psychological needs of cancer patients through access to a multi-disciplinary team of physicians and specialists.
