The latest news on the School of Medicine’s 50th anniversary celebration
is now just one click away. Get updates on scheduled commemorative events, read
historical anecdotes, and share in the celebration when you visit http://www.med.miami.edu/50thanniversary.
The site may also be reached by clicking on the 50th anniversary logo on the
School of Medicine’s home page at http://www.med.miami.edu.
The site’s visual enhancements are best viewed with Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5.0 or higher. It has been tested on both MAC and PC browsers, including
Netscape 4 and 6; Internet Explorer 4, 5, and 6; Opera 5; and Mozilla 1.0.
UM ETHICS PROGRAMS WEB SITE
FEATURES LATEST PRIVACY RULE
The University of Miami’s special Web-based training program on health
privacy and confidentiality has just been updated with the latest federal rules
for protecting patient information. The Web site, a project of UM’s Ethics
Programs and the School of Medicine’s Hospital Division and Web Development
Group, is apparently the first in the nation to provide a comprehensive overview
of the new rule (under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act,
or HIPAA) and its implications for health professionals. The site is http://privacy.med.miami.edu.
Comments, suggestions and case study submissions for inclusion in future versions
should be sent to ethics@miami.edu.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR INTEROFFICE MAILING
OF 2002 PERSONAL BENEFITS STATEMENTS
The Office of Benefits Administration is delivering 2002 Personal Benefits Statements
via interoffice mail. Your 2002 statement includes your personal retirement
benefit calculations, your portion of health care costs, Survivors Protection
(life insurance) information, and disability protection. Also included is an
annual value of your benefits.
SECURE YOUR COPY OF PHYSICIAN’S POETRY
AT PSYCHIATRY DOCTOR’S BOOK SIGNING
Louis B. Antione, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences,
will trade his stethoscope for a fountain pen this Friday when he will be a
featured author at a book signing to honor his skills as a poet. At the August
23 event, sponsored by the Center for Haitian Studies, Inc., Dr. Antione will
sign copies of his book Naked Souls (Ames a Nu), a collection of poetry in English
and French. Also joining him for autographs will be author Dr. Charles Pierre
Jacques, and guitarist Stanley Colimon will entertain. The book signing will

LOWE ART MUSEUM PRESENTS UNIVERSITY
EXHIBITION ON URBAN AND SOCIAL ECOLOGY
The University of Miami invites you to an exhibition and lecture celebrating
the interdisciplinary project "The Living Traditions of the University
of Miami Initiative for Urban and Social Ecology (INUSE)" at the Lowe Art
Museum. The exhibition will be from August 17 through November 3, with
the accompanying lecture by Henry R. Luce Professor Samina Quraeshi on October
24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participating UM schools in this project include the College
of Arts and Sciences, School of Architecture and Center for Urban and Community
Design, School of Communication, School of Education, School of Law, and School
of Medicine. Admission to the Lowe Art Museum will be free to Coconut Grove
residents upon presentation of a driver's license proving residency. For more
