FAMILY MEDICINE STUDENTS
HONORED FOR WORK ON TB SCREENING PROJECT IN HAITI
A group of students
and faculty members in the Department of Family Medicine & Community
Health received the 2001 "Best Student Paper in Preventive Medicine"
award from the American College of Preventive Medicine and the Ulrich-Frank
Foundation for their report on work in Haiti. The group conducted a
preventive health project to identify cases of tuberculosis (TB) in
children living in Haitian orphanages. "Screening for Tuberculosis Among
Orphans in a Developing Country" was authored by students Judith Francis,
Lynn Matthews, Alison Reed, and Fitsum Yohannes; as well as faculty
Michel Dodard, M.D., assistant clinical professor in the department,
and Arthur Fournier, M.D., associate dean for community health affairs.
The investigators observed a remarkably high prevalence of TB in this
previously unidentified high risk population. Since TB has recently
re-surged as a worldwide public health concern, with dramatic increases
in incidence among those with HIV, the homeless, and in developing countries,
the students felt it was important to bring attention to the need for
routine screening for TB and other infectious diseases among institutionalized
orphans. The paper also was accepted for publication in the American
Journal of Preventive Medicine.
