2ND ANNUAL SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GOLF TOURNAMENT BENEFITS SENIOR CLASS
The second annual School of Medicine Golf Tournament will be held this Saturday, March 20, at the Presidential Country Club in North Miami Beach. Proceeds from the event, which is open to faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends, help the Senior Class of 2004 raise funds for graduation week activities. The registration fee is $130, which includes breakfast and lunch; 18 holes of scramble-style team golf; several contests, including putting, driving, and “closest to the pin;” prizes; awards; a gift bag and more. All registrations, accompanied by payment, must be received no later than Wednesday (a free foursome will be provided to anyone donating $1,000). DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD TO BE PRESENTED
TO DR. MYRON D. GINSBERG

Myron D. Ginsberg, M.D., of the Department of Neurology, will be presented with this year’s Faculty Senate Distinguished Faculty Scholar award on Friday, April 30, at 3 p.m. in the Storer Auditorium, School of Business Administration. At the award ceremony, Dr. Ginsberg will also present "Preventing Brain Damage After Stroke - a Journey from Bench to Bedside.” A reception will follow. For more information, call 305-284-3721.

HARVARD PROFESSOR TO SPEAK AT MEDICAL GRAND ROUNDS
Janet Hafler, Ed.D., assistant professor of Pediatrics (Medical Education) at Children’s Hospital Boston and director of faculty development in the Office of Educational Development at Harvard Medical School, will be the guest speaker at Medical Education Grand Rounds on Friday, March 26, at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fifth floor. Lunch will be served. The title of Dr. Hafler’s presentation is “How Medical Educators Can Be Promoted: The Use of Qualitative Research Methods.” Dr. Hafler will explore the range of scholarship in medical education, help participants understand the application of qualitative research methods in medical education, and explore the expanded curriculum vitae used at Harvard Medical School for promotion. FINANCIAL ADVISORS VISIT CAMPUS THIS WEEK

FREE MEDITATION CLASSES THIS SPRING
The Department of Wellness and Recreation will be offering “I Meditate”— free meditation classes—throughout the spring. The classes will be held on March 19 and 26, April 2 and 9, and May 14, 21 and 28 from 1 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. in the Dominion Towers tenth-floor conference room. DISCUSSION GROUP FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN
The Employee Assistance program will be presenting S.T.E.P. (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting), a discussion group for parents of children under age six. Participants will learn how to understand a child’s behavior, how to talk and listen to a child, and how to use discipline that makes sense. The group will meet once a week from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for eight sessions in room 6012 of the Diabetes Research Institute. Meeting dates are: March 23, March 30, April 6, April 15, April 22, April 29, May 4 and May 13. HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH SEMINAR
The Human Subjects Research Seminar for March will feature Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D., director, Forum for Bioethics & Philosophy. VISION SCIENCE LECTURE
The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute hosts Ronald Harwerth, O.D., Ph.D., from the University of Houston, presenting "Defective Vision from Glaucoma: Structure-Function Relationships," in the Frontiers in Vision Science series, Thursday, April 15, in the Retter Auditorium, second-floor, BPEI. COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS LECTURE SERIES
In recognition of March being Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, UM/Sylvester is offering lectures on Tuesdays at noon in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301. Today, Michael Hellinger, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.C.R.S., will present “Screening and Detection of Colorectal Cancer.” On March 23, Mayra Lima, R.N., M.S.N., F.N.P.C., will present “Medical Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.” Lunch will be provided. IDX OPEN REFERRALS TRAINING
The Office of Business Information Management Systems announces IDX open referral training sessions, designed to train employees who enter appointments or referrals into the IDX system. Training is mandatory for all employees who schedule appointments and/or enter referrals. This training will allow the employee to understand, create, and edit referrals, and link referrals to the appointment scheduling section. There are multiple dates and sessions available. CANCER SURVIVORS’ DAY
UM/Sylvester presents "A Celebration of Life," honoring South Florida cancer survivors, this Saturday. This year's event promises to be an inspiring celebration for the entire family as we enjoy a picnic and the flora and fauna of picturesque Flamingo Gardens in Davie. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cancer survivor and musician David M. FACULTY PROMOTION AND TENURE WORKSHOP
All faculty and others interested in the appointment, promotion and tenure process are invited to join Dean John Clarkson, faculty senate chair Mary Coombs, and leaders of the School of Medicine Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee for “Policies and Procedures for Promotion and Tenure.” This will be an opportunity to learn about the process and to interact with individuals involved in promotion decisions. SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAM
S.A.F.E. (Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange) is a two-hour program that uses simple strategies to help participants reduce their risk and avoid dangerous situations, Thursday, March 25, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the UM/Sylvester conference room 1301. ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS CONFERENCE
UM, Florida Atlantic University, the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust and the Florida Bioethics Network present the third annual South Florida Environmental Ethics Conference on Friday, March 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Rosenstiel Marine Campus. Topics include ecological integrity, human rights, international law, environmental consciousness, land use planning and zoning, conflict resolution in environmental disputes, and more. SPINAL CORD INJURY LECTURE
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine presents “Promoting Neurogeneration Following SCI: Moving the Approach to Humans,” Friday, March 26, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Jackson Rehabilitation Center, third-floor auditorium, presented by Irene M. Estores, M.D., assistant professor in clinical rehabilitation medicine. Dr. Estores will review the current neuroregeneration approaches in animal models and provide information on ongoing human clinical trials. NIH REGIONAL SEMINAR ON PROGRAM FUNDING AND GRANTS ADMINISTRATION
The Office of Extramural Research sponsors semi-annual regional seminars on program funding and grants, May 5 to 7 at the Wyndham Miami Beach Resort. These seminars are intended to help demystify the application and review process, clarify federal regulations and policies, and highlight current areas of special interest or concern. The seminars are appropriate for grant administrators, researchers new to NIH, and graduate students. Computer labs will be offered in conjunction with the 2004 regional seminars; however, space is limited. Before April 5, tuition for the NIH conference is $250, and $50 more for the computer lab.
