SCHOOL OF MEDICINE COMMENCEMENT IS MAY 12 AT KNIGHT CENTER DOWNTOWN

The School of Medicine's Class of 2001 has worked tirelessly for four years and the goal is finally achieved. Join these students, along with keynote speaker Gloria Estefan, for Commencement 2001. Faculty, staff, family, and friends are invited to share in the celebration. The commencement ceremony begins at 2 p.m., May 12, at the James L. Knight International Center, downtown Miami. The University's general commencement will be held on the Coral Gables campus, University Green, on May 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

$5 MILLION SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT AT DEDICATION OF BATCHELOR CHILDREN'S RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The dedication of the Batchelor Children's Research Institute on Thursday will be remembered for years to come. During the ceremony, the building's primary benefactor, George E. Batchelor, stunned the audience with his surprise announcement of an additional $5 million gift to the institute. The gift brings to $15 million the total amount of Batchelor's commitment to the institute. This new scientific facilityóone of the largest centers in the world devoted exclusively to research in children's healthówill house the research initiatives of the Department of Pediatrics. The facility includes more than 147,500 square feet of research space and completes the Schoninger Research Quadrangle at the School of Medicine, which includes the Lois Pope LIFE Center, the Diabetes Research Institute, the Papanicolaou and Fox Cancer Research Buildings, and the R. Bunn Gautier Building.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDED NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

Esther Obeng, a first-year graduate student in Microbiology and Immunology at the School of Medicine, has been awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowship. This award is designed to support students who show strong promise of becoming tomorrow's leading biomedical researchers. Obeng is one of only 80 students selected for this highly competitive fellowship, out of a national applicant pool of nearly 1,100. In the summer of 1999, Obeng was awarded an American Cancer Society fellowship for summer research. She is the fourth School of Medicine graduate student to receive an HHMI predoctoral fellowship.

LOUIS CALDER MEMORIAL LIBRARY SPECIAL BOOK SALE

The Louis Calder Memorial Library will hold a special book sale, beginning May 1. There will be 100 copies of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine in their original boxes at $1 each, plus many other classics for $2 to $5. All proceeds will go to the United Way. EAP BRINGS ASSERTIVENESS TRAINING TO MEDICAL CAMPUS

The Employee Assistance Program brings you "Assertiveness Training," a four-session course designed to help you identify your personal communication style and develop assertive techniques. This session will be held consecutive Tuesdays, beginning May 8. Nurses and masters level licensed mental health professionals can earn four continuing education credits. BASCOM PALMER EYE INSITITUTE PRESENTS OCULOPLASTICS UPDATE

The course will count towards four hours of Category 1 Continuing Medical Education credits, and four hours of nursing CEUs. There is no fee for UM and Bascom Palmer employees.
