CHAMBER RECOGNIZES UM PHYSICIANS AND PHILANTHROPISTS AS HEALTH CARE HEROES

Congratulations to the medical center's finalists for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Health Care Heroes Award. School of Medicine faculty members Walter Lambert, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics and medical director of the Child Protection Team/Child Maltreatment Evaluation Program, and John Hall Bowker, M.D., professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, were named as finalists. In addition, Lois Pope, founder and president of Leaders Involved in Furthering Education (LIFE) and George Batchelor, chairman of The Batchelor Foundation, were named as finalists in the Individuals of Merit category. Pope and Batchelor are major donors to the medical school, and buildings bearing their names are currently under construction. The award winners will be honored at a luncheon on May 12 at the Wyndham Hotel in Miami.

RENOWNED ARTIST AND CHILDREN AT DEBBIE INSTITUTE UNVEIL LATEST MASTERPIECE

The cafeteria of the Debbie Institute now displays "The Art of Inclusion: A Child's Collage," a collaborative mural by artist Xavier Cortada and students at the Debbie Institute of the Department of Pediatrics. The piece represents the integration of children with special needs into mainstream society and was unveiled at a ceremony on March 29. Support for the work was granted by the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council, Mayor Alex Penelas, and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. "TOBACCO WARS" TO BE PRESENTED BY FORMER CHIEF OF FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION

David Kessler, M.D., former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and now dean of the Yale University School of Medicine, will present "Tobacco Wars" at the School of Medicine on April 3 at 3 p.m. in the Mailman Center's 8th Floor Auditorium. Dr. Kessler will speak at a town meeting-style forum hosted by the University's Council on Behavioral Science Research, recounting the FDA's fight against the tobacco industry. Dr. Kessler, appointed by President Bush and reappointed by President Clinton, served as the FDA commissioner from November 1990 to March 1997. All faculty and staff are invited to attend.

SEARCH MEDICAL LITERATURE THROUGH THE RICHTER LIBRARY

Journal articles, dissertations, selected book chapters, and more can be accessed through the University of Miami Richter Library's web site. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) classifies diseases, drugs, and procedures using medical and nursing subject headings and is available on the Richter Library's easy-to-use, A-to-Z list of databases at http://www.library.miami.edu/research/research.html.

AUDIENCE MEMBERS NEEDED FOR POPULAR DEBATE SHOW

Faculty and students are invited to represent UM by participating as audience members during a taping of the popular political debate TV program "Hardball with Chris Matthews," on April 3 at 6 p.m. at the Knight Center in downtown Miami. The topic of the show, which airs weekdays at 7 p.m. on MSNBC and at 8 p.m. on CNBC, will be the struggle over Elian Gonzalez. Past shows have visited college campuses such as Harvard and USC. EMPLOYEE AWARENESS PROGRAM PRESENTS DISCUSSION ON ALCOHOL

In observance of National Alcohol Screening Day on April 6, the Employee Awareness Program (EAP) is offering a seminar entitled "Alcohol? What's the Fuss?" from noon to 1 p.m. on April 3 in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155. Topics to be discussed will include the definition of alcoholism, the surgeon general's recommendations, and how to talk to someone with a potential drinking problem, among others. LEARN TO SAVE A LIFE AT ADULT CPR CLASS

If a loved one's heart stopped beating, would you know what to do? Learn how to perform CPR and you'll have a chance at saving a life. Certification in adult CPR is offered on April 4, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the George A. Smathers Wellness Center on the University's Coral Gables campus. OTOLARYNGOLOGY GRAND ROUNDS SERIES BEGINS WITH DISCUSSION ON SINUS FRACTURES

The Department of Otolaryngology presents the first lecture in a Grand Rounds series on April 6 at 8 a.m. in the Chandler Library, room 356 at ACC East. Roy Casiano, M.D., professor in the Department of Otolaryngology and director of the Center for Sinus & Voice Disorders, will speak on "Frontal Sinus Fractures." He will address such issues as injury assessment, indications for surgery, and treatment controversies. For information on credit hours offered, call 305-243-4387.
