MEDICAL SCHOOL OFFERS SYMPATHY
AND SERVICES TO VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS
In the wake of last
week's tragic events in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania,
the School of Medicine community expressed sympathy and offered help
in any way possible. Several faculty members traveled to the disaster
areas to offer their services in relief efforts, employees lined up
to donate blood, and Dean Clarkson contacted the deans of medical schools
in New York and Washington, again offering any assistance they may need.
The medical center observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the
victims and out of respect for their loved ones, coinciding with a nondenominational
memorial service held on the University's Coral Gables campus. Following
last Tuesday's attacks, all traveling School of Medicine students were
located and determined safe. If you would like information on making
a contribution toward relief efforts or volunteering, contact the American
Red Cross at 305-644-1200. Counselors from your Employee Assistance
Program are available for support at 305-243-7676.
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION
AT UM RECEIVES ACCREDITATION FOR FOUR YEARS
The Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACME) has awarded four-year
accreditation to the University of Miami School of Medicine as a sponsor
of continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. This recognition
ensures that CME activities at the School of Medicine meet the high
standards of the AACME's Essentials for Accreditation. Member organizations
of the AACME include the American Medical Association, American Hospital
Association, The Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Federation
of State Medical Boards, among others.
LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS OF "IDENTITY
THEFT" PERPETRATED ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES
Keep your eyes open
for a common credit card scam that recently has been identified in many
southern states. People dressed in business attire and posing as Bank
of America employees have been targeting college campuses, inviting
staff and students to fill out credit card applications. If you fill
out an application and return it to these individuals, they can use
your confidential information to apply for a credit card in your name.
On receiving the card, the imposters charge purchases up to the maximum
credit limit, leaving the debt in your name. If you submit an application
for credit, make sure to mail it directly to the issuing institution
or hand deliver the application to a local bank branch.
NOVEL IDEAS CAN EARN INVESTIGATORS
$60,000 FROM TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
The Office of Technology
Transfer is awarding $60,000 through the GAP Fund Program to help support

Anyone who submits an invention disclosure before September 30 is eligible
to apply. A total of three awards will be presented: one at the School
of Medicine, one at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric
Science, and one at the University's Coral Gables campus. The deadline
for submission is September 30. Projects selected will be announced
on November 30. Those interested can obtain application forms through
the Technology Transfer web site at http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/1,1770,9018-1;9849-2,00.html
