Patrick M. Steel is the Chief Executive Officer of POLITICO. Mr. Steel has spearheaded the successful expansions of key verticals and the launch of ambitious new projects to generate record revenue and profit growth since assuming the role in May of 2017. He leads the strategy and operations for innovative intelligence platforms such as POLITICO Pro and AgencyIQ, cementing POLITICO as the preeminent new media source for politics and policy in power centers across the globe, redefining the delivery of customizable information flow.

During his three-year tenure as CEO, Mr. Steel has overseen new subscription launches in California and Canada, as well as a content sharing partnership with the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. Despite headwinds across the digital media sector, POLITICO has seen record advertising revenue growth including over 20% growth in 2019.

Mr. Steel’s competitive spirit, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to obtaining successful outcomes have been hallmarks of a remarkably diverse and distinguished career. There are few executives who can match his senior-level experience across government, media, and an array of international business sectors. Prior to POLITICO, Mr. Steel enjoyed a successful 16-year career with the investment bank of FBR Capital Markets & Co., managing high-stakes capital market transactions for companies in the energy, real estate, insurance, financial services, consumer, and technology sectors. From 2007-2009, Mr. Steel was based in London where he operated as Group Head of FBR’s European Investment Banking effort.

Mr. Steel’s private sector experience was proceeded by a distinguished government career. He served as the Associate Administrator of the Foreign Agricultural Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a Senior Advisor on the White House China Trade Relations Working Group, Deputy Chief of Staff to Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman and a Special Assistant to President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Steel holds a bachelor’s degree in European History from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in Legal and Political Theory from University College London, and an MBA from Georgetown University. He currently lives in Washington, with his wife and their teenage sons.
